Actually, this looks like the 3-3-1-3 (sort of) Pep used vs Chelsea on Camp Nou.

Now, imagine we had Iniesta instead of Cesc, Neymar instead of Iniesta, Reus instead of Cuenca and Suarez instead of Alexis.

Yes, it was meant as a 3-3-1-3. Similar to Bielsa's classic formation. A 3-3-1-3 that'd transition to a 3-5-2 in defense.

More clinical control at everything- passing, dribbling, finishing, good in small spaces, not just open field counterattack. Not to say Neymar can't improve, but he's never needed to develop those skills before coming to Barça.

He developed those skills when he was younger, he just hasn't refined them because he wasn't playing in a youth structure that emphasized that

The brazilian style is strong with Neymar. It is what makes him special, but also what makes him a problem sometimes. He should move away from that. He should cut the tricks to the minimum, those are eye candy above everything else. He should be thinking about efficiency. Reus has a way of playing that is stripped of what is unnecessary. Love that about him.

His art is rare and dying, even in Brasil

It's been a while since someone of his play style has been on the world stage. I wouldn't want to take it away from him it's what makes him unique and the difference maker. Unless you want him to integrate his eye candy into efficiency.

I don't really believe those tricks usually work on the biggest stages. When they do -- that dribble he did on Calderon was f...ing awesome (see below), a moment of just immense untrainable talent -- they're very special, but they seldom work.

Agree with you totally here. And he has, just take for eg the confederations cup where he was the MVP for the entire competition, showed efficiency, skills and everything a top player should have, even in the the world cup. Neymar always shows that he wants to be a leader in a team. judging by some of the above comments i realise alot of guys here still take players for granted. football goes in cycles and players come and players go, we will never have someone as efficient as xavi, never someone as efficient as messi and when they are gone we will still win titles. Every player has their unique style, you cant say take away the style of one player as its intrinsic to who they are, this isn't fifa.

Barça isn't Madrid- the style isn't about buying the "top" players in the world, then trying to find a way to mash them together into a team (rinse and repeat). The Barça brand is technical team football- players who have fantastic control of the ball and work together to create team goals. My point was simply that Reus has a skill set that is a far better fit than Neymar's (and Neymar would have been a much better fit at Madrid, where counterattack plays a more prominent role and there is the space to support Neymar's "swashbuckling" skill set). Neymar is young and talented and can learn (as did Alexis, who was vastly improved as a Barça player in his last season). And, of course, Neymar clearly has tried to learn to play more "Barça-like." But he is simply a sloppier player, because Barça-type precision has never been necessary for him to excel before his move here.

Neymar should just take an example from Iniesta and work on perfecting his croqueta, far more useful and successful than all the other flashy stuff he tries (and mostly fails with against superior defenders than he faced in Brazil). His short passing game will improve with time, as did Alexis'.

Ney brings new abilities and skills which is good. Why give them up and copy another style? Of course he has to adapt to the team and system but Barca should not rely on the same things that characterized the team 5 years ago.
Bring new things or you will not win anything. Use Ney's strengths instead of trying to change him into someone else.

Use Ney's strengths instead of trying to change him into someone else.

This is true as long as you don't force the rest of the team away from *their* strengths. It's a balancing act, of course, but (hypothetically) if Neymar's looser style of play then requires box-to-box midfielders and a flat back four, you really would have to buy a whole new set of players. You wouldn't do that unless he's the player you are building your main tactics around.

For the present, one would expect Barça to still be a Messi-centric team, and, if there is a shift, I'd bet it would be to take advantage of Suarez. So one would accommodate Neymar's strengths only insofar as they support the main tactical plans Lucho devises. Ibra, Villa, and Sanchez are all players who weren't able to play their strengths, to varying degrees, in order to accommodate Messi as the focal player. Unless Neymar proves he is a more valuable focus than Messi and Suarez, he is the one who will have to adapt more than the other way around. If Neymar's skills complement the other two, fantastic, but that remains to be seen.

I simply can't agree with this and that's just my opinion. based on your theory, r10 would have never been the world beater he became in FCB. because ronaldinho was Flashy on a Godly level and never scored that many goals, to be exact 119 goals in 5 seasons. based on how a coach manipulates his team during a game, "space" can be created for any type of play. Since pep left we slacked and became a lazy, static team. Some of the players simply didn't have the "legs" to support counters and became comfortable/lazy with the slower version of possession play. Barca's style was always linked to the players we've had at our disposal and the coach's desires. just re-watch barca under frank rijkaard and barca under pep. Completely different but both was devastating on its day. We adapt and move on.
