Also Messi played better, midfield played better, etc.

And thats basically my point, the whole team is playing badly and is dysfunctional....selling players like Pedro and Sanchez and bringing in Suarez/Reus/Aguero/Whoever is not going to fix our problems in front of goal against the best defensive teams if the team as a whole continues the way it has been going.

Also other teams adapted and learned how to deal with such small lineups. Villa-Messi-Pedro would have it much more difficult against todays defenses even with 2011 form.

And I don't believe this. If we were still playing as well AS A TEAM then we would not be having the same struggles we are having now. We have always had it tough against those types of opponents.....only now we are creating very few if any good chances and back then we still were but often we missed them (Chelsea at the Bridge in '12 comes to mind) and the biggest difference I see is the movement in the attacking third is gone dead, back then it was unpredictable and fast along with the passing in the final third.....only a manager can fix this IMO. The attacking players we have right now are good enough.

?? Neymar - Messi - Sanchez is too small/weak and yet Villa - Messi - Pedro were not and were part of the team that most say was the best Barca, even better than 09.

Messi was lethal 10/10
Villa 10/10
Pedro was average.

Current Messi is weaker than that Messi.
Sanchez will never be as lethal as Villa.
Ney is on paper more lethal than Pedro, but for some reason he is having huge problems in scoring goals in Barca.

We have weaker defense, weaker midfield and a weaker attack than then.
Again, Sanchez scored 3-4 Goals in 3 Seasons in Champions league.
We can't rely on him as being our 2nd most dangerous man, when Messi stops scoring.

2/3 of our attack is not too lethal. And Messi is not the same Messi from 2009 or 2011.

We should play like this.

We would again have 3 chances in the whole match against Atletico Madrid.
We would again get bullied for 90 Minutes in midfield and attack.

What would change exactly except a better defense?
Midfield and attack would still be equally lost and without any ideas.

Reprise of the current Season in terms of attacking play, with 2-3 less shots per match on our Goal because of a new Dc.

Really, I don't remember Benatia playing for us in that game. If he did, I would've put money on 1-0.

Elche:Barcelona 0:0
-- we would never score a Goal on that match
-- with or without Benatia
Barcelona:Atletico 1:1
-- again, we still wouldn't score more than a lucky Goal
-- and we would probably concede at least 1
-- Benatia alone can't mark 10 opponent's players on set-pieces

We can have him, and we will still concede 10s of set-piece Goals.
You need 4-5 Benatias in defense and midfield to stop conceding stupid Goals

You will always gonna have few chances to score against a parked bus in defence.

But the worst Barca in years scored 2 valid goals against this super-Atletico. If we can play just a little bit better in attack, and that will happen once Messi is back to his best, and if we take care of our defence, we are back.

Atletico wasn't that great in attack either. They created 2-3 chances themselves. But with Mascherano's error and Pinto in the goal, that was enough for them to snitch a goal.

So the onus is on Messi then? "We'll be ok once Messi starts scoring 50 goals a season again" right?

All the team needs is 20 from Alexis, 9 from Neymar and... 50 from Messi.

Benatia is all the team requires, the rest is up to Messi scoring 50 goals per season again.

I just don't have a feeling that he will regularly score 20 Goals per Season for us, and that he will start scoring in big CL games.
I just don't believe that he has that (Barca) quality.

The reason he doesn't score in big CL games is because he doesn't play in big CL games. Martino was starting with Neymar-Cesc-Messi. Last year was similar with him on the bench against Milan. Against PSG he won a penalty away. Bayern was a disaster but that was the whole team and tactics. He's scored a couple of Golazos this season against Real and Atletico, both the big rivals(Didn't start either Clasico).

There's no point blaming him for not performing in big games when he doesn't play in them. If he was trusted more then maybe he would have shown what he's capable of. Hopefully either Lucho trusts him or club get rid of Cesc which will force them to make better use of Alexis.

We should play like this.

I like those tactics. 3-4-3 in attack, 4-3-3 in defense. Alexis could be perfect for that hybrid RW/CF role IMO.

My only real gripe with that formation is the Fabregas/Iniesta midfield. Still don't think it would work very well. Also, it would require a lot of running from Alexis and the RB. Which is part of why I think Alexis could be perfect for that role: because of his workrate.

Alexis could score more if he actually took more shots, hesitate less and looked less for Messi. Neymar also could score more if he improved his finishing, again Fabregas can score more goals and now we have Deulofeu. Alexis and Neymar aren't finished products like Villa was when we bought him, still a lot of room for improvement.
