Virgil van Dijk

people who don't see no one is close to Messi are being disingenuous.

There.

No one will take me seriously though, because I was the biggest troll here.
Maradona is close, Pele is class but a little below.

You can debate between those three, but ultimately Messi is more talented than Pele and has achieved more than Maradona. He has to take GOAT title due to being most talented (or equal with Diego) player of all time and most accomplishments of the three candidates.

Anyway, off topic.

Van Dijk,at this rate, will literally go down as #1. Every day he seems to step up in the rankings.

There will never be a consensus, because if Messi doesn't have one,no one CAN. In any sport. Literally.
He won't. Nobody will overtake Beckenbauer.

It's splitting hairs - the vast majority consider Messi the GOAT, other than oddball, bitter Ronaldo fanboys. There's no real such thing as a consensus. If 80 percent of people consider you the best, you likely are.

Messi is far more consensus GOAT than Van Dijk would ever be consensus GOAT CB. I would say very very few consider him as good as Franz or Paolo or Franco, but most consider Leo better than Diego or Edson.

I love Van Dijk as a player, just being honest about his place in the pantheon.

Virgil lacks the big titles, only 1 cl and 0 int. titles, have to say though Netherlands in last 10 years wasnt strong enough for big titles. Think in WC14 + Virgil Netherlands maybe goes home with WC title 🤔

I don't think he can be the best ever. If you class Beckenbauer as a CB or sweeper, which he generally was, he is in a class of his own.

Big Virgil isn't that far off the Maldinis, Baresis and Nestas though imo. Which is incredible praise for him.

Maldini has the CV to back it up, though.
20 something years at extremely high level, early bloomer who lasted for eternity.

It is a bit like Messi or CR7 who both hit the perfect storm, starting their careers at top clubs, having great coaches, having great work ethic, no career ending injury, great longevity.

24 years at an elite Milan sides.

True on Maldini. I just think Beckenbauer is GOAT CB.

Maldini does have the CV in addition to the fantastic ability, that's true.

Let me summarize it. He have never seen that. He is 40 and still score tap in and pens. He is so goat and will reach 1000 goals.

Sheer coincidence, but yesterday I said to someone Van Dijk has to be considered ahead of likes of Ramos at this point.

For me he has been for years(Ramos pure on defense overrated imo), but I mean that that should be what the general consensus should have arrived at by now. Really not many I can think of that should still be ahead of him. Only the Italian bloke comes to mind.

Exactly like Nesta says his consistency is insane. Same story with national team. Rarely catch him on mistake. Usually whoever else is near him.

Imagine he didn’t have what many thought would be an injury he could never come back from.

Heard he is criticised a lot in Netherlands. Is it true? How good has he been for the NT?

There was a period if I recall 2 years ago where he was getting some criticism.

But since a while, no. They recognize he is WC and possibly best at moment.

Only his post game interviews are annoying as hell. Too politically correct. But think very solid captain on pitch.
