Having serious doubts he'll get over this fairly poor stint. And what happens when Benz is gone? He looks half as useful without him

He is always a threat juts can be shite to good one moment to the next but he never drops his intensity and goes at teams every time gets it and always looks to get on ball and do that.

Dont think he will ever be a 'quality' type player but one who teams give ball to as can makes thinks happen eventually and it is worth it for those moments.

He does have that 'next possession' NBA type mentality about him and has been a guy team gives ball to for years now. But this will not work if not complimented well from other side of the field

Agree they a threat on other side to stretch game and allow him more room on ball but today Villareal actaully seemed to be allowing him to receive the ball out wide and drive at them.

Almost as if they found it easier to defend him in areas they knew he would get the ball rather than him popping up in areas dont want.

Still he could have scored in firs half, helped win pen in second etc. Always present in the game even when touch/finishing is shite.

He was always closer to Dembele than Neymar.

Still the best winger in La Liga though.

Purely in league Dembele been better so far for me this season.

Both give the ball away a lot.. Vini more so and both are high volume types to make things happen.

Was reluctant to get on the hype train. Smart move.

Just has a patch of bad form. He'll come good again, you'll see. Madrid as a whole are underwhelming currently. Will probably turn it up and demolish Liverpool for starters.

Why not flip it around and say he just had a patch of good form?

Because the bottle was corked and got uncorked in the most dramatic way possible last season. Once over the hump, it hardly stops. That said he'll still have his episodes where fluffs easiest touches and makes ridiculous decisions.

What I worry about is what he does when he becomes senior player upfront. They'll either give him someone of same stature or smaller as will be considered 'homegrown star'. But so far he's been best when has older players to support and focus him. Mentors rather than peers

Think he is a very solid player(reminds me of an exchange we had about rating his previous season). But like you said, if you pay attention you still see the frequent mishaps. Said before, extremely lucky Benzema made the most out of the few good runs and passes he had in CL. Now that Benzema is not in beast-mode it will really hurt his numbers.

Still has plenty of potential but feel like became victim of same syndrome as Camavinga where with very little shown get disproportionally hyped up like crazy.
All club fans do it though.

He was also underwhelming for Brazil since the qualifier games beginning of last year. Think you said he was tired which was legitimate argument. But hasn't shown much more than that since then on WC.

That syndrome is called Ancelotti
Several players look quality in the role for a time. James did in 14/15 as well.
But I really struggle to see positive progress in most of the young talent under Carlo. People like to point to Fede and how he's been great at RW, Vini and how he exploded, Rodry and how he scored the goals. But this is not tantamount to steady improvement and growing importance in my view.
Like with Zizou and lack of progress for Asensio over time (despite ACL), zero willingness to bring likes of Llorente or Reguilon through to give Marcelo/Case a competitor etc, Carlo has no patience for some and plenty for others. That said both he and ZZ do well to react when whatever they try does stick and build on how they respond.

Pretty shocking when comes to active integration and growing a player role in a team tho.
