Ousmane Dembélé

He just admitted that the reason he is doing better now is because he is more professional and said he paid for being unprofessional at Barca as it didn’t work out as he wanted.

Well no shit buddy

It's a cautionary tale about signing very young players for so much money. Few have the mature mentality as a young player. Dembele didn't have it. He would've been an excellent buy at 24-25, but was a horrible one at 19-20.

However, we made a mistake not seeing that his recent performances under Xavi were building up to something important. That was on us, not Dembele. It's just a bad story alltogether. Got an immature player we paid a fortune on, and by the time he matured, he already had such a shitty history with us that we missed out on his prime.

Pure Bartomeu fuckery, the 99th variety.

That was on dembele the club and coach wanted to keep him because they saw he was turning a corner, but he and his agent had different plans.

We didn't really believe he was going to be one of the best 5 players in the world imo. I doubt the offer we made to him was one that would recognize him as such. We simply didn't believe in him at that level after his shitty history with us in his first 5 years here.

I don't blame the club that much either tbh. Very difficult to offer Dembele a big contract in the summer of 2023, just based on some projection. We already did that based on some projection and got shite instead. Just an immature player that took ages to come into his own. Should have stayed away in 2017 and signed him later on.

Don't hate on him though. Most teenagers will be like Dembele, hard to talk sense into. Very raw and stupid.

Doubt PSG believed in him that much btw. They believed in him like they believed in Muani. If he flopped, they get rid of him and move on to the next 80m signing. They simply placed a bet for 50m and it pait off. Easy to do that when your owner is the Emir of Qatar.

Neymar was great for us. Won 2 titles, a CL and left with 222m in our coffers. Was a good story for us. And PSG got nothing in return. Opposite Dembele to an extent. Bought him at the right time and sold him at the right time also.

Yea, but I doubt anyone including PSG and dembele himself thought he could be a top 5 player, even for 1 season.

But Xavi definitely believed in him and wanted him to stay and we gave him an offer.

He was just over being at Barca which is fair enough, I wish more players were like that instead of holding

Dembele surely did, to his credit. That's why I don't get that mad about him. He delivered in the end, that much is certain. If only for one season so far. Not many players we don't trust get to be favorites for BD at some other clubs.

His agent was making some wild demands for his contract renewal.

And the club and/or Xavi were not willing to bench him until they could agree to a deal either which is how we ended up with that 50m buyout clause he renewed on.

Wild as in what? Wild in general, or wild for us at that moment, when we were dealing with severe financial issues, issues we aren't even past after 2 years more...
