Yeah, that's an extremely arrogant move. He should be very glad he didn't get into any accident, because if he did the punishment would probably be a lot harder on him.
He probably bought an automatic and thought "hey, this isn't any different from a go-kart, except there are people walking around the edges of the track instead of tires. Mental note to self: do not slam into them".
