Good to see Leo get 30 for the season. Keeps that sequence up of 30+ each year from 08/09 although this is his lowest total.

We're not at the weakest. We're still able to compete at the highest level if the players are up to it, as we're watching this right now. That's why I think we have a chance at CL this season and are one of the dark horses of the competition. Remember, it's only a knockout on 1-round where everything can happen. Teams like Bayern and City that leave lots of gaps in defence suits are more than an defensive-orientated Atletico. We'll have a go this season, I'm sure.

Real got whacked in their own ground by City.

Barca got outplayed by Liverpool last season (even the 3-0 was hugely flattering)

Atleti were battered at Anfield but Liverpool fluffed too many chances and the sub keeper threw one in

Valencia went out

Let's see what Sevilla and Getafe can do in Europa but United will be favourites and both CL and EL were all English finals last year.

This is not an argument against the Prem having slightly more success right now. It’s an argument of league quality dropping. Which it hasn’t. It’s more or less the same it has been since Sevilla were serial EL winners.

both Ritchie and jamdav covered why it's a much weaker league in their responses and I agree with them both. I don't see how yiu can look at the league and think it's in any way better?

Never said it’s better. You said it got worse. Without saying what’s it’s supposed to be worse than. It’s not worse than what it was last year. Or 2 years back (when Atleti won EL).

It’s pretty much the same as was last year.

The tantrum the fat pig threw against Osasuna seems to be working perfectly. The limping cunt stays on the pitch while Ansu gets subbed off.

Barca are 13 points ahead of Sevilla in 4th and 20+ points ahead of Villareal in 5th despite being poor all season long and sacking the manager half way through and the players not being arsed.

It's one thing with huge gaps when Barca and Real were the best teams in Europe and getting 100 points but Barca and Real aren't even at the top table now in Europe.

Difference is in past season when Barca and Real were vulnerable other clubs stepped up. Valencia and Depor won titles in the 2000s. Sevilla and Real Sociedad took it to the last game. Atleti in 2014.

In Europe still only Bayern, Madrid, Liverpool and Juventus have a better points % than us. Madrid will likely finish with 89 points, last season we had 87. Those are very typical numbers for any title winning club in a top European league. The past decade of needing to finish in the mid-nineties to win the league were not normal.

If you want to talk about other clubs winning the league in the early 00s, back in those days Madrid and Barca were finishing with even lower point totals than we are now.

In 2004 Valencia won the title with 77 points. We finished with 72 that season and Madrid with 70.

In 2000 Deportivo won with the league with 69 points. We finished with 64 and Madrid with 62. Atletico has 69 points this season and Sevilla has 67, both with one match remaining still.

75-80 points were considered high totals back then.

Europa changed for EPL teams when CL place became available.

Prior to that it was more or less an afterthought if had something to play for in league.

Can see results of that.

La Liga quality has definitely dropped. Used to be could get virtually a world eleven from Barca/Real. Now probably 2/3 at most.

Would put Bayern as the strongest team in CL this year though.

I don't think it is though. La Liga was completely dominating the Europa League every year (as Serie A did in the 90s when Italian league was strongest), now the Premier League teams are favourites every year. Atleti getting knocked out in the group is the best hope for Spanish teams, or maybe Sevilla.

The Premier League bottomed out in terms of quality a few years back with all the top teams poor and what happened? Leicester won it. Then Klopp and Guardiola built up what have been the best teams around the last couple of seasons, even if the quality below hasn't been too high. La Liga at the moment is on a downward slope.

PL teams can attract better players, because money. I think a lot of players would choose Spain, if they could get same money. PL is the money league.

Barca, Real and Atletico are the only teams offering big wages in Spain, but they also attract the best players.

Of course it is about money.

That and wanting to play in commerically biggest league and more of top coaches to play under.

The points total isn't the point. It's the fact Barca and Real are far ahead despite being poor by their standards. This is the worst Barca side since 07/08 at least and in 07/08 Barca finished below Villareal. Barca did reach CL semi final that year. Beyond that it's the poorest Barca since 2004 and Valencia won it that year.

It's the point that nobody has took advantage to get anywhere near them.
