What is the ISL?

It is co-promoted by IMG-Reliance (the joint venture between IMG and Reliance Industries), Star India and supported by All India Football Federation (AIFF). India’s leading industrialists and celebrities from sports as well as the Indian film industry have invested in owning the Indian Super League’s eight franchises. These are based out of Chennai, Delhi, Goa, Guwahati, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune.

The League is committed to investing in stadium refurbishment in the eight identified venues and also very importantly to a strong grassroots development programme that will create a platform to groom football talent in the country. For the first time in Indian football, globally renowned footballers will be playing alongside the best Indian footballers. With a mission to revolutionise the sport, Hero Indian Super League is positioned as a high quality and dynamic league that will elevate Indian football to an international level.

ISL 2015 Teams List

A total of 8 teams going to take part in the Indian Super League 2015, i.e. Delhi Dynamos FC (Delhi), Northeast United FC (Guwahati), Atlético de Kolkata (Kolkata), Mumbai City FC (Mumbai), FC Pune City (Pune), FC Goa (Goa), Kerala Blasters FC (Kochi) and Chennaiyin FC (Chennai) being the squad names.

The Franchise’s must have to have 14 Indian players in a team of 22. 1 marquee player (foreign) and 7 internationals is a must.

1. Atletico De Kolkata - Kolkata

Much like their parent club Atletico Madrid, they have also followed a similar pattern of having blue and red stripes. They have a tiger with wings and five stars over their crest which gives their logo an edge above the rest.

2. Delhi Dynamos - Delhi

Delhi Dynamos have a very neat and clean logo with a lion roaring on a blue crest.

3. FC Goa - Goa

Keeping things simple is the Goan way but they know how to keep things easy and yet intimidating. Their logo has a bull on it with just their name on it.

4. FC Pune City - Pune

The ACF Fiorentina powered FC Pune City has kept things aggressive. Their crest looks like a fort with a small flag on top. Two horses holding the football up shows respect for the game. There is a small logo of the French team right at the bottom. The banner portrays the club's philosophy which is passion, honour and glory.

5. Kerala Blasters - Kerala

The team from god's own country shows what their team comes from. With elephants holding a football in their trunk shows the team's connect with their roots.

6. Mumbai City FC - Mumbai

Mumbai City FC, which is the dream of Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor, shows the true Mumbai spirit in their crest as well. Their crest resembles a fort with Mumbai's lifeline, the local train in between the logo.

7. NorthEast United FC - Eight States from the North East India

Bollywood star John Abraham powered NorthEast United Football Club knows how it's done. Their crest is simple yet they show their power with eight states from the north east.

8. Chennaiyin FC - Tamil Nadu

The latest team to release their crest or logo was the Chennai side. Their crest looks similar to Kerala Blasters but the face mask makes their logo look pretty intimidating.

Some big names of world football is getting involved in ISL this year. As names of some former star of international football have already been announced by the franchises ISL 2015. Delhi Dynamos FC (Delhi), Marquee Player of ISL 2015: Roberto Carlos

After creating huge hype in the first season by signing Alessandro Del Piero as Marquee player, Delhi team officials have decided to give the shoes of him to Roberto Carlos for ISL 2015. According to a report, Roberto Carlos da Silva Rocha, the full name of Roberto Carlos is a Brazilian player and currently serving as the manager of Delhi Dynamos.

Former Marquee Player of Delhi Dynamos: Alessandro Del Piero

Roberto Carlos started playing for the Brazil national football team in 1992. He was named in the FIFA World Cup All-Star Team in 1998 and 2002. Left back being his favourite place. The former Real Madrid left back is all set to take care of both of the roles of Delhi Dynamos FC Manager and Player. He has done the same few years back for a Russian Club.



Northeast United FC (NEUFC), Marquee Player of ISL 2015: Simão

Simão Pedro Fonseca Sabrosa, also known as Simão to put on the shoes of Joan Capdevila, The Portuguese star midfielder will play for Indian franchise Northeast United FC mainly as a left winger.

Former Northeast United FC Marquee Player: Joan Capdevila

Simão made his official debut for Portugal at only 19 years of age, scoring his first goal on 18 November 1998 against Israel. Simao Sabrosa has also played for FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.



ISL 2015 Atlético de Kolkata (Kolkata), ATK Marquee Player: Hélder Postiga

Hélder Manuel Marques Postiga, is a Portuguese player and is occupied in Atlético de Kolkata as striker and added a extra gleam to the ISL 2015 Marquee Players List. Postiga represented the country in two World Cups and three European Championships, helping the national team reach the final at Euro 2004.

ISL 2015 Mumbai City FC (MCFC), Marquee Player: Nicolas Anelka

Nicolas Sébastien Anelka is a French footballer who is player-manager of Mumbai City FC. He also used to serve as a regular member for the French national team. Anelka began his career at Paris Saint-Germain, but soon moved to Arsenal.

ISL 2015 Mumbai City FC (MCFC) Marquee Player: Nicolas Sébastien Anelka

He became a first team regular and won the PFA Young Player of the Year Award the following season. Anelka played 69 times at international level and won his first international honors with France at Euro 2000, and won the Confederations Cup the following year.


ISL 2015 FC Pune City (FCPC), Marquee Player: Adrian Mutu

Adrian Mutu is a Romanian footballer who plays as a forward for Indian Super League club FC Pune City. His career has included setbacks including two long suspensions for failed drugs tests. Despite this, he was regarded as one of the best Series A strikers of his era. In 2014, Mutu acted in a music video released by hip hop artist Snoop Dogg.

Lucimar Ferreira da Silva, also known as Lúcio is another Brazilian footballer who joined ISL 2015 Marquee Players List as he will play for FC Goa of the Indian Super League as a central defender. Lúcio accomplished many milestones like 2002 World Cup, 2005 Confederations Cup and 2009 Confederations Cup. In the 2006 FIFA World Cup, he set a FIFA-record by playing 386 consecutive minutes without committing a foul, a streak which was finally broken in Brazil’s 1–0 quarter-final loss to France. In August 2006, Lúcio was appointed as captain of Brazil.



ISL 2015 Kerala Blasters FC (KBFC), Marquee Player: Carlos Marchena

Carlos Marchena López, is a Spanish footballer who plays for Indian club Kerala Blasters FC. Primarily a central defender with an aggressive approach, he can also pitch in as a defensive midfielder. His achievements include a total of 330 games and 11 goals during 13 seasons. Marchena represented the nation in two World Cups.

ISL 2015 Chennaiyin FC (Chennai), Marquee Player: Elano

Elano Blumer, very often known as just Elano, is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Chennaiyin FC, on loan from Santos. Elano began his career with Guarani of Campinas in São Paulo state. He also won the Indian Super League Golden Boot Award in 2014 season.

Chennai is the only team who has signed the same player from 2014 season as the Chennaiyin FC Marquee Player of Indian Super League 2015, i.e. Elano.

Defending champions Atletico de Kolkata have won the rights to be the first club to pick their choice of player in the domestic draft of the first ever Hero Indian Super League Player Auction and Draft in Mumbai.
The Domestic Player Draft features 112 players. Clubs will be making the most of the best available players in the Domestic Player Draft to complete their respective 13 player signing in this category.

A team like FC Goa, which already have 11 domestic players signed through retention or in free market, will participate only in the first two rounds of the draft to pick up two players.

Mumbai City FC will be the only club which can participate in all seven rounds of the domestic player draft to complete their requirement of 13 domestic player signings as they have signed just six players till now.
Each club has a purse of Rs 21 crore. A club can spend maximum of Rs 5.50 crore on domestic players' signing so as to complete its requirement of 13 domestic players, while for international and marquee player signing they can spend upto a maximum of Rs 15.50 crore.

Any unsold player from the auction list will go into the Player Draft and will be available to be picked by the ISL Clubs at the base price.

The minimum squad size for a club is 22 players. Each club is allowed to increase their squad size to 26 players, by adding four more players. A club can sign the additional four players under the 'Additional Player' allocation through open market with maximum two international players.

A club buying players at auction will also be considered in the 'Additional Quota'. The bid price at which a player is bought by a club at auction, will be considered from the International Player Salary Cap i.e. Rs 15.50 crore.
The auction will be an open auction with each domestic player being individually presented in person. The auctioneer shall ask for bids, starting from the base payer fee of each player, with each subsequent bid request being at least of the increment stated.

Each club will have to ensure that it has three goalkeepers in its squad of 26 players. It is recommended that each club have two Domestic and one international goalkeeper.
As of date, 64 players have been signed by the eight clubs through retention or in free market. A total of 40 domestic players will be selected through the draft so that the clubs will have 13 domestic players by the end of the draft process.

Each club is mandated to have two domestic player under the age of 23 years old (called 'Developmental Player') among with 13 domestic players.

It is optional for clubs to bid on a domestic player in the Auction. A club may buy up to four domestic players at the auction.

Any domestic player bought at the auction will be counted in the 'Additional Player' allocation over and above the 13 domestic players that each club must accumulate by the end of the draft.

Other than the celebrity club owners, that includes former India cricket captain Saurav Ganguly who is to be present, each club would be represented by their head coach/assistant coach and technical staff during the Auction and Draft.

A lot many players in the Draft list command base prices which are in excess of Rs 20 lakh.

The highest among them are free agents are: T Saran Singh (Rs 33 lakh) and Keegan Pereira (Rs 32 lakh).
Some others are: Gurjinder Kumar (Rs 27 lakh), Augustin Fernandes (Rs 26 lakh), Nicolas Colaco and Gilbert Oliveira (both Rs 23 lakh), all of them on loan from Salgaocar, and free agents Beevan D'Mello (Rs 24 lakh) and Zakeer Mundampara (Rs 23 lakh).
Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Shilton Paul has been pegged at a base price of Rs 22.50 lakh.

A majority of players have been fixed with base prices below Rs 10 lakh. Each franchise club has been given a salary cap of Rs 20 crore for the season to be spent on the players. The Player Draft list has 15 goalkeeers, 35 defenders, 52 mid fielders and 11 strikers to choose from.

ISL 2015: Complete squads after auctions

A total of Rs 7.22 crore was spent on the ten players at the auction, with FC Goa and Kerala Blasters the only teams not to buy any player. India national football captain Sunil Chhetri was the biggest earner at the inaugural Indian Super League (ISL) auction in Mumbai on Friday, going to Mumbai City FC for Rs 1.20 crore, while Chhetri's team-mate at Bengaluru FC, central midfielder Eugeneson Lyngdoh, was purchased by Pune FC for 1.05 crore from a base price of Rs 27 lakh.

Indian Super League on Friday announced fixtures for their second season which will be staged across eight cities in India from 3rd October to 20th December, 2015.
Chennaiyin FC will host defending champions Atletico de Kolkata in the opening game at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai.

The organisers of the League announced the fixtures on Friday. There will be a total of 61 games spread across 79 days. The league stage will witness 56 games in home-and-away format, followed by two-legged semi-finals and the final on December 20.
The action will then move to Goa the next day with FC Goa pitted against Delhi Dynamos FC, while fans in Mumbai will witness the ‘Maharashtra Derby’ on October 5, 2015 when Mumbai City FC locks horns with FC Pune City at D Y Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.
The Hero ISL bandwagon will reach Kerala on October 6, 2015 when last year’s runners-up Kerala Blasters FC play their first home fixture against NorthEast United FC. The newly laid pitch at Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata will be put to test for its first big match night when Atletico de Kolkata tussle with arch rivals FC Goa on October 7, 2015. Delhi Dynamos FC, FC Pune City and NorthEast United FC will host their first home matches on October 8, 9 and 16, 2015, respectively.

The inaugural year of Hero Indian Super League witnessed an unprecedented response in the history of Indian football, achieving a rare feat of being the fourth most watched football League in the world. For the first time in Indian football, globally renowned players like, Alessandro Del Piero, Nicolas Anelka, Robert Pires, Fredrik Ljungberg, David James, Luis Garcia, David Trezeguet, Elano Blumer and Joan Capdevila played alongside the best Indian football talents.
Hero ISL’s first edition saw participation of footballers from 36 varied nationalities, including India; changing the way football was perceived in the country so far. The globally viewed tournament had a whopping 129 goals scored at an average of 2.11 goals per game.

I am not from chennai, but i studied there last 4 years now i moved to Bangalore. Tbh i never like chennai. Anyway i don't follow cricket after IPL, so i don't know much about srini mama except that he is chairman of icc and is corrupted as fuck.

ISL second edition sees major increase in sponsorship revenue, now at INR 100 Crore

With just two weeks to go for the Indian Super League’s (ISL) second edition to begin, sponsors from across the country have expressed their interest to be a part of the footballing extravaganza. Numbers clearly indicate that there has been a stark growth in sponsorship revenue for the league this year. The second season of the league is all set to notch up a whopping Rs 100 crore, close to double of what it managed last year, Rs 55 crore.

ISL has roped in Flipkart as their new associate sponsor, DHL, Imperial Blue and HP Enterprise as official partners. Volini has also joined hands with the cash-rich league as their official pain relief partner. Hero already has rights for the title sponsorship as they had availed it for a three-year period, and Maruti have renewed their associate sponsorship with ISL as well. Pepsi has also re-signed on the dotted line as their pouring partner, Muthoot group as referee partner and Puma as official ball partner.

Amulhas have also extended their association with the football property.The ISL had 10 brands as part of their sponsorship scheme last year and it’s expected to rise to 17 this time around. Negotiations with five other companies are currently taking place.

During a press meet, an ISL spokesperson said, “ ISL has caught the imagination the audience, be it families or the youth. It has also now become the fourth most watched football league in the world. It helps companies from an activation point of view as it’s four months long, from pre-season to the end of the league. We are hoping more sponsors will jump on-board.”

Vinit Karnik, National Director of Group M ESP told Economic Times,”A lot of advertisers who were sitting on the fence about participating in the ISL last year are getting converted seeing the numbers in year one,” He went on to add that sports such as football and kabaddi were growing, while cricket has remained relatively stagnant.

ISL saw 429 million unique television viewers last year, one of the highest for any sport in the country. Even Kabaddi registered a 50 % growth as compared to their first season. According to Industry experts, the same is being expected for the ISL 2. A lot of marketing extensions wanted to wait and watch ISL’s performance in season one, to go and invest in the property for the second season.

Let’s hope the quality of football equates to the financial gains India’s hottest football property is garnering.
