When player's agents talk with a club about a transfer, the club tells the agent the overall cost they're willing to pay for the player. Then the club removes the fee of the player from that sum and what's left is his salary over the contract's length. If there is no fee, either the entire sum goes into the salary, or they accept a sign bonus.

He can also have the same brainfarts like Araujo for all we know. I'm pretty sure Araujo would look like a top3 defender in the world playing in a low-block. Look at his performance under Xavi.
