Lol, all players thrive in certain situations and are not as great in others. There is no such thing as the perfect player in every scenario. Wijnaldum and Thiago are comparable quality wise. It's just that one does better than the other in certain areas of the game. In some aspects, Thiago is better (play-making, dictating the tempo, passing from deeper areas), in others Wijnaldum is better (goals, quickness in counter attacking situations, directness in transition phases). One is a box to box player with an attacking edge, and one is more of a central midfielder to even deep lying playmaker.
For us, we have De Jong who is supposed to be the one we will build our midfield around in terms of orchestrating the play from deep. And, with that in mind, Wijnaldum seems to be the better fit. Koeman, IIRC used De Jong at Nederlands in a similar way to how Thiago was used at Bayern.
It made sense to go after Thiago if we didn't sign Pjanic. But we did sign Pjanic, so now we need someone who can penetrate in transition phases and arrive in dangerous positions to provide end product - especially goals.
I want a midfielder who can bag double digit goals. 10-11 goals a season. Or close to that. While being an asset in overall game situation as well (defending, pressing etc.). Gini is that man.
