Club World Cup

True, but int. level is really just Europe plus Brazil and Argentina who are real contenders for the World Cup.

But I definitely agree there's fewer poor teams in World Cups than there are likely to be in this. Or were before it became 48 teams.

The south American teams being able to win it as well, makes a big difference

Now it's just a matter of which Team from Europe will win.

But it's good as a revenue driver for the south American teams, so they are happy to participate, who knows they might spring a surprise

True, Brazil and Argentina are really the only other contenders but they are massive contenders (or Brazil were before they declined, but they can still realistically win it).

I still think the four Brazilian teams and River and Boca can do ok. We might see some surprise packages from Africa and Asia too.

Obviously it's 99.9 percent likely that a European team will win the trophy, but hopefully some of the other teams can be competitive. FIFA will be hoping so too as it will drive up interest in the tournament. Nobody wants to see a series of drubbings by Euro sides.

That's true. It's a jackpot especially for the South American teams. Mostly burden for the European.

I think European teams are the least motivated by this.

European teams want the money but likely can't be arsed with the games.

Obviously the UCL is far more prestigious than Copa Libertadores and other continental Champions Leagues so this matters less to European teams. Winning the CWC would be more prestigious than continental trophies for the others as they'd have to go through European heavyweights.

I know this sounds very Eurocentric but likely true.

Yeah I think after the season players would rather just have a good time at Ibiza or Mallorca than play this shite. It's not like they are making much more money from this? Maybe one million bonus if they win or something.

No idea how much the players are making. Says a lot if the clubs are making a fortune but the players not much (relatively speaking).

As a football fan I will watch it as there's no other football on for me as I am not watching under 21 Euro. I am also very intrigued to see if it turns out better than anticipated or a disaster (both on and off the pitch). I think both are possible.

But as Messi says earlier in the thread, there are the under 21 Euro as stated, and the Women's Euro starts 3 or so weeks into this as well. So there are some other options, football-wise.

They are selling tickets for $5 now for the opener.

If Saudi oil money wasn't backing this, they would lose so much money.

International teams need to demand the same money when they go to the world cup next year, a competition the world actually wants to see

Read that they were offering tickets for tonight's game to students in Miami, something like $3.50 per ticket and you can get 5 tickets.

They're paying so much to the teams when not selling tickets at all or extremely cheaply. Like you said, 'other' money sources.

This is ridiculous. Laughable.

When are the Saudis running out of money btw? You can only dump so long before you run out of it.
