Current Modric is tremendously overrated IMO. Modric and Kroos are a big reason why Madrid get dominated in midfield big time. Yes they can execute a brilliant pass, but they are washed up physically.

But only Modric (ok except for KDB) can make that run v PSG or that assist v Chelsea that turned the game.

He doesn't offer Xavi - Iniesta sustained and overwhelming level of domination of the ball (he didn't in his prime either), but he offers moments of absolute magic and tenacity in the vein of a ZZ.

This is another product of Pep's fondness for wide midfielders at City. They play immaculate passing combinations but can't finish for shit when it matters. There is no replacing goalscoring wingers and true strikers that can sniff a goal in any situation.

Current Madrid is Benzema's crowning achievement and what puts him all alone as the best forward of the last 10-15 years after Messi and Ronaldo. Some of his executions are absurd. It's not like he's getting insane passes and he puts them in. He creates freak goals.

I do actually agree with you. It's great that he's still able to pull of these great assists now and then. But his general play is not fantastic for the most part. But those one moments of excellence can sweep the other 89 under the carpet a lmost of the time.
