8 - Pedri

Imagine if it's a Spain-Argentina final; if the form and draw allows that.

We have never had a Spain-Argentina big game at a World Cup since Pep changed football, much less a final, and I have been wanting to watch it.

In fact, in history, Spain rarely plays Argentina at the tournament. It's a bit weird - must be one of the least played meetings between huge nations. Though admittedly Spain mostly became elite post 2008.
That would be the dream final since Portugal won't win the WC.

If I were Scaloni, the only way to play them is to have a 4 men midfield + Messi. Outnumbering them in midfield is the only option imo.

Surely you don't want Portugal to win anything til Ronaldo retires anyway, lol. It would be hilarious if they won the centenary World Cup, partly in their own nation, right after he retired.

Yeah they'd need to outnumber and outwork them in midfield. Spain have superior technique (not that Argentina don't have good technique), but the Argentines are warriors and have the trump card that is Leo.

Only one player has completed more than 220 passes in the opposition half of the pitch in LaLiga this season.

That player is Pedri, and he has completed 324 such passes.

He has finally become the main man of midfield.

I think the key for Spain is actually De La Fuente somehow realizing that Ferran Torres is a good striker and fielding him in that position, plus putting one of Joan Garcia and David Raya between the sticks.

The other positions pick themselves.

----------------------Garcia/Raya--------------------
Carvajal--Cubarsi--Hujisen--Cucu/Balde
--------------------Rodri--------Pedri------------------
----------------------Olmo/Fermin-------------------
------Lamine----------Ferran----------Nico-------

I would play Pedri deeper. The midfield 2 with Pedri and Rodri is unbeatable plus Olmo always plays great at CAM for Spain.

No way Oryazabal, Morata and Samu are starting over current Ferran. Also Unai Simon over Raya and Garcia.

Ferran is surely an option but it's not like Oyarzabal has been bad at CF for Spain lately.
True. But if Ferran keeps his form up and gets top 3 in Pichicchi, there should be no argument against him starting for Spain at CF.

Back to topic, Pedri should be played in the CM duo. Especially with what Olmo/Fermin provide at CAM. You gain more that way.

Not to take anything away from Torres, but he's cooking over flicks super attacking football, don't think he will carry that over to Spain.

While Oyarzabal has more or less always looked good for space once fit

Ferran Torres would ironically enough be the closest to the profile fit of Fernando Torres in his peak, or Morata.

It depends if DLF would want that.

But as you say Oyarzabal has been very good for Spain of late. But I'm not sure if he is who you want to lead Spain in a major tournament.

And it doesn't seem like he will build good form with this Sociedad over this season.

Their is a trust deficit with Torres that he has to work hard to over home, while Oyarzabal has delivered at the highest level for Spain.

But I do see your point about his potential club form this season because RS is going nowhere fast and it will be very hard to not start Torres if he's the high goal scoring Spaniard in the league this season.

They can probably have him start a few games between now and the world cup and see if he delivers.

The thing with his though will remain, if he can give you what Oyarzabal will on a final.

Good problem to have

Your best player plays in his best position, you move other player to accommodate him. For DLF that means you play Pedri as CM and Yamal as RW, all other positions are debatable and could change, those two can't. But it's DLF...
Doubt it will happen but aye, said the same myself above, using the same argument. I think us three are right in this respect, but that's just my opinion.
