8 - Pedri

Pedri was much deeper last night than he was in games lost to Portugal etc.

They are finding a role to get him more freedom to go and find the ball and help dictate.

Set up looked almost like Zubimendi DM, Pedri box to box to get on ball and Merino box to box to get on end of things and less in build up.

Huijsen probably plays a part also at LCB.

How good he is on the ball they dont need two deeper players as much to help in build up.

Pedri can pick and choose when he drops to help Zubimendi from that LCM role.

He was good vs Portugal as #10. I think he got more touches, passes and more involves than normal that game.

Last two games as a free 8 show his best quality. Though the lack of a real DM and possibly a natural LW at Barca mean he can't play the same way like with Spain.

Real question is what will the coach do once fabian is back and if rodri gets back close to his best

Will he drop zubi who has played well since he came in for rodri.

Merino will definitely drop to the bench, he's a great impact sub.

But Fabian, pedri, rodri was clearly his preference at the euros

Rodri will start over Zubi when fit.

At Euros they played more of a number 10 with Pedri off after an hour for most part and Olmo on.

Olmo cant play either of the midfield roles from last night really though so if they play like that his chances will reduce.

Formation has changed now presumably due to Huijsen and to get Pedri more involved.

He will like Merino as he closes a lot, good in both boxes and with the false nine they need physicality getting into the box to finish off chances.

Would think that once Rodri is back DLF will use Pedri higher up the pitch again.

They have a lot of options and tactical flexibility to rotate or adapt to different opponents. Could play either 4-3-3 which fits better what I think is their best midfield on paper (Rodri, Fabian, Pedri) when they're all fit or change to 4-2-3-1 when bringing on likes of Olmo and Fermin. Or if starting Zubi and don't trust him to play a single pivot.

But Rodri, Zubi, Fabian, Merino, Pedri, Olmo, Fermin is probably the best NT midfield both in terms of quality and especially depth since 08-12 Spain.

World Cup should cement him as best in world in midfield or CL.

Maybe needs that late tournament performances in CL and Intl to fully cement it.

Looked a bit tired by end of last season. Hopefully fresher this time.

Pedri is joy to watch. IMO best MF in the world, but guys like Vitinha won bigger accolades.

Regardless, it's delighting Barca has the most exciting talents like Pedri and Yamal at disposal. Our time will come.
