7 - Ferran Torres

Look, this whole argument about his movement is getting a bit into my nerves, because it's used as an excuse against any criticism pointed twds him.

Yes, we know his off the ball movement is good, but we know that mainly from his time at City and Spain NT, and secondarily from his outings here.

In particular, Jammy said in reply about the sitters he missed tonight, that 'no one would have gotten on the end of those'.
Let's see if there is any truth to the above in regards to 3 sitters:

1) Sitter no1: (60.52')
Alba is found on the move on the wing, who puts in a beautiful ball to the feet of Ferran in the box.
He skies the ball and misses the goal.
xG: 0.45 (HUGE)
Look at his movement -> nothing in particular that any LW would have done at this stage of play.

2) Sitter no2: (75.11')
Memphis receives the ball centrally, with Ferran close, and 2 defenders jumping on him.
He makes a clever through ball to Ferran, who runs fast with it and blasts it straight onto the GK.
xG: 0.3 (Substantial chance)
Credit here: 80% to Memphis, 20% to Ferran only for the few meters he ran fast WITH the ball, rather than any movement W/O it before the pass that never really occurred.

3) Sitter no3: (75.40')
Adama torments 2 defenders and puts in a beautiful pinpoint cross landing precisely at his feet.
Ferran fucks it up. xG: 0.54 (HUGE)
Almost NO movement there. He is waiting in the box jus as Memphis.
The whole chance is 100% down to Adama

So, you see in the chances most of us are complaining he missed tonight, the 3 most important of them were NOT down to his movement.

So, please spare me the apology starting with the 'no one would have gotten on the end', as this is not the case in every chance he misses

They were all down to movement and reading the play from others... clearly that is the point he reads the game well in those situations and finds space.

No one is claiming no player ever other than Torres will score a goal in the box. But in that second half today and in first half none of the forwards were for most part.

Birdy making shit up.

Go watch the game again and realise he was best dribbler on pitch and far better than likes of Dembele.

Didnt watch quite right first time round.

Ferran is a huge improvement over Gavi in that role. Makes the team better, more fluid, has great movement and instinct for getting into chances but also helps purposefully circulate the ball in the final third. Currently, he’s our best option in that role and noone else should be preferred there.

His finishing is a big weakness. Some of it might be physiological and maybe has to with confidence.

His movement is impeccable. It's not a quality every player have or manage to develop or learn in general otherwise everyone would do it.

Ronaldo is the clear example of it. There have been players quicker, players better on the ball but very few players ever have been as good as him knowing how to position yourself where you receive those chances.

Sterling is great at it too but obviously misses a lot of chances. Ferran won't be Ronaldo obviously but I hope he won't end up wasting as many chances as Sterling usually does

Simply not true that any player could do it. That's why Ansu was so highly rated too. His overall feel for the game, his finishing was top class as a 17 year old.

Fati is highly rated because his finishing is next level, if Torres could finish half as well, he would be on his way to being our new Pedro.

I'm shocked at how many great chances arrived at this guy's feet.

And it's not because the team is always looking for him. It's just that he knows where to be.

Most impressive thing of his match was that he played like he knew he had to help turn the match around. Came on with that determined attitude and keeps going even if a dribble or shot doesn't come off.

He's not the non-choir boy BBZ wanted, but he is the non-choir boy we need.

The goals will come. For sure.

some on here are starting to clutch at straws with this guy. calling his movement 'amazing' and pointing out his dribbling output vs elche.

i understand we have to be patient and look for positives with ferran, but let's not fall into overrating some of the things he does well.

malvolio.

He has 2/3 years to prove whether he becomes a consistent scorer or whether he becomes a Morata, Griezmann (for us) type of scorer. And even by that point he will still be just 25 and entering his prime.

10 games is too soon, but if he had been technically finishing the opportunities he has had for us in the same we he took the Bilbao goal in his first games, then he would be sitting on 5+ open play goals.

of course he has. would wager that he has even more space to breathe when comparing to likes of dembele or griezmann, as those guys were coming into a much better team than we currently have. and expectations were higher.

just pointing out that people go overboard about his movement or dribbling. just the other day vs valencia he couldn't dribble or move to save his life. now he suddenly is CR the 1st Man Utd chapter.

I like this guy for some reason. He replaced Gavi, who should be nowhere near lw ofcourse, and changed the game. I liked his 1v1 attempts cutting in, his positioning and passing were great. Still, he can't finish his chances yet, buy it's too soon to call him a bum. First month in the team is too soon to judge anyone really, Lukk proved that.

Nah the folk going overboard are the ones claiming he is shite at everything and cant dribble etc.

Then when point out he ran with ball well yesterday that is made out as going 'overboard'.

Calling him a 'bum' and a 'reject' for me is going overboard and making out he will be huge bust before even played a game or then a few games also.

Each to their own.
