Xavi system favored him in the first season when we often played defensive pragmatic football, as it was seen by Xavi to be needed to win the championship. In the 2nd season, when Xavi wanted to play more offensively, defense went bad. Under more pressure, Araujo and Stegen started dropping stinkers.
This is how I remember it, and if I look for stats, I'm sure they check out and mark a big drop in performances.
Nah, that was mostly Inaki's fault.
MATS - 28 games, 27 goals conceded, 15 CS
Pena - 10 games, 17 goals conceded, 2 CS
I know we can't only blame GKs for goals conceded (though that's popular here) but difference is obvious. Conceding a goal per game is ofc not good enough if you want to win the league but 1,7 GC/G is almost relegation zone level, lol.
I still believe we could have won the league if MATS wouldn't miss 3 months when when we went from -2 to -8 on the table behind Madrid. Obviously then lost Clasico at Bernabeu conceding a last minute goal but we just had to go all out at that point (unlike on Tuesday, lol). Draw meant nothing at that moment. Madrid (on pace for 95 points) wouldn't bottle 8 points lead in 7 games. If we would get within a 5 with a win then they would maybe crumble under pressure.
I think it was more personell rather than Xavi trying to play more offensively. Busi leaving had an impact on structure of the team. Balde missing entire second half of the season and Cancelo who can't defend if his life depends on that replacing him played a role too. As did Gavi's injury. I know people think he's only running around like a headless chicken but I think with his energy he did contribute to our defensive record in 22/23.
