Everyone acts like Martin is a complete bozo but lets be real. He was thrown into the fire quickly. He shouldn't really be playing big games in the first place. There was a time Eric Garcia was Gerard Martin. That means there could be a time where Gerard Martin develops into current Eric Garcia as well and actually be a good useful squad piece.

Not everyone is an amazing La Masia prospect jumping into the team at 18. Hell Hector Fort can't seem to outplay Martin and he fits that mold. Let's see if Martin can become decent. (Yes I realize Eric Garcia was La Masia as well. But, he was vilified ever since we got him)

He's older than Balde. He's just not good enough for this level. Nothing to do with being inexperienced or young.

Problem with Martin is that Balde is known to get injured rather frequently. So we could easily find ourselves in a similar situation next year with him starting vs a Liverpool or a PSG.

We can't afford to have subpar players at this level.

He beat out Fort so he deserves to stay. Age isn't even a factor hell most defenders don't peak until older age. In a perfect world he wouldn't be here but we live in the forever not 1:1 land so we have to hope Flick develops him.

We have to live with him due to our circumstances, but he's simply not talented enough to play for us.

But thats how it is for most teams. When starter is out you worry how backup will do and hope he doesnt fuck up anything. If backups could play PSG or Liverpool they would be no backups

The problem with him is, for the last two to three seasons, guy has always been injured during our crucial knockout UCL games. And I fear that's going to happen again this year, and wanted a good enough backup.
