2022 Ballon d'Or

Are the nominees official or is it just speculation at this point? It's hard to imagine the nominees being announced before the season is not even finished.

It's the Ballon d or mate. They closed votes on October for an annual award.

This is kinda expected

He's the top scorer in Ligue 1 and has the most assists too. Was also great in the CL. Not his fault his GK and defenders gave the game away vs. Real Madrid in the last 15 minutes. On an individual level there hasn't been a better player in the world than Mbappe this season, although PSG combusting will cost him the BdO trophy most likely.

I haven't watched Liverpool much this season but Mane has the same amount of non-penalty goals as Salah since November or something like that, and then led Senegal to Africa Cup of Nations win vs. Salah's Egypt AND then eliminated Salah and Egypt from the World Cup qualifiers.

Those things do matter.

De Bruyne is a good shout though. Extremely impressive last game but maybe not so much consistently most of the season.

Nah. Benzema and Lewandowski have easily been better this season.

Before the rule change last month, closing the votes on October makes more sense as most of the big events happen in the summer.

But now with the rule change, it doesn't make sense to officially announce the nominees as a lot of events can happen till the end of the season.

People trying very hard to discredit the Ballon D'Or when 5 of Messi's 7 Ballon D'Ors are absolute no contests by any metric. Only 2010 (Xavi, Iniesta) and 2021 (Lewa) is a toss-up.

He also had a Ballon D'Or taken from him for 2013 because they reopened voting to hand it to CR7. Majority of CR7's Ballons are also fair (2008, 2014, 2017). In his case, 2013 (Ribery or Messi) and 2016 (Suarez) are toss-ups. CR7 also had a Ballon taken from him by Modric lol.

Much more often than not, they get it right.

A calendar year has 12 months not 10.

They don't include the next 2 months in the next edition either. So basically they don't cover it.

Why not award it in January with a little bit of common sense??

I'm not sure if I follow, but the rule change is now based on season-by-season, not by calendar year.

Either way, both rules rely heavily on the what happens in the summer as that's when the biggest trophies are contested (with the exception for the WC22).

Also has to do with logistics. January is usually a busy month for most teams. Players won't be able to attend the gala.

They even changed the format for the BdOr because Lewa wouldn't have a chance if the WC is considered, and yet he still choked it against Villarreal.
