Based on what exactly?

The guy starts for German NT but he can't for a club where he is captain?
Based on their season and recent performance, it's as simple as that.

He starts for German NT because of seniority and pecking order. He's always the next in line after Neuer. It's been like that for years.

He still played as our #1 in those two games after having been out for so long. If Flick thought so poorly of him, he would have given him the cold shoulder as he has with Fati, I reckon.
Pena also played a match, I see it more as a gesture of goodwill than the terrorist returning to the top of the food chain. When it mattered, Flick went with Tek.
Isn’t he on a whopper of a contract + Covid era deferrals? We all know how difficult it is getting rid of Barca players once they sign these huge contracts. Xd
Hard to speculate about his salary. Numerous seemingly contradictory rumors out there.

Yet that’s exactly what I did  see below
It was rumoured that he deferred part of his wages to the second half of his contract and also agreed to a 30% pay cut for that period.

Had he deferred 50% of his salary over the first three years (2022 to 2025), he would have received around 6m gross during that span. For the remainder of the contract 2026 onwards he would earn about 14m gross.

Without the deferrals, his salary would have been about 11.8 m in the first half of the contract, and 8.25m in the second half, 60m in total.

I read that his current contract is worth between 40-60m. I wouldn’t be so quick to transfer out either if I were him.

One was injured all season? What are we comparing here?

He isn't Neuer to command that kind of authority at NT level. He's picked because he's the current best they have who wouldn't be next in line to Neuer?

I think it's more based on how he's performed in the big matches, when the spotlight was the brightest. No one really cares how Ter Stegen performs against the minnows. He's choked in the big Champions League games, as of late anyway.
Yes, I know the barcaforum mantra - we want a GK to bail us out in the CL. Whatever the fuck that means.

GK won't save you if you have a shit defence and attack that can't outscore the opponent.
Barcaforum likes to wax lyrically about Madrid and Courtois performances in the CL KOs, but they haven't lost repeatedly to 3-0 scores or above. When they had a disdunctional team, like this season, they couldn't do shit.

I guess we'll see if he is delusional or a fraud. A delusional player would never accept the humiliation of being a bench warmer. A fraud would just focus on his monthly paycheck.

This guy is shameless enough that he will still be lifting trophies as the 3rd goalkeeper.

We only have ourselves to blame for giving him an alleged 40-60m euro contract. No player in his position would want to leave with those terms.

I don't really care as long as he doesn't play. That's the main thing.

I would prefer the club to stand firm but we're pussies so we won't.

Issue is how does Stegen react to competing for the number 1, possibly starting from the 2 spot.

Does he play hard and fair, or does he go through the media to try and destabilize the 1?

If it's the first option then keep him. His contract is not his fault, and not as large as the media is trying to make it sound. No one even mentioned his contract in all the years of Laporta administration until now.

If it's the latter then he has to go. Tell him he's not part of the squad plans, Chelsea style. No need to drag it through the mud. A solution would have no option but to come.
