To be fair Vermaelen is not that bad. He would be a certain upgrade over any of our defenders except for Pique and Mascherano. Puyol is injury ridden and getting old so I don't have full faith on him being a regular starter next season.

How in the world is it nonsense? His dominance in defense is almost entirely attributed to how physically strong he is. He can manhandle nearly all other SF's in the game because his lockdown defense is impenetrable. FFS, he even guards PF's sometimes...
