Not really an opinion, just based on analysis and stats. Even if they were meant to be a defensive mid, they failed to execute it at all. Vidal was never a defensive mid either and served to be just a wide midfielder most times. -

None of the players mentioned showed any defensive superiority and were losing more than half their duels and disposessed just as much. Paulinho for one was even misplacing most if his passes as with Vidal. They served no purpose, even if there is an intended one. -
