    8 - Pedri

I used number of passes as a broad indicator of general involvement in the passing game. That was my argument. I have specifically said a number of times that I don't think it's anything like a measure of overall performance. Helps to read what I actually said.

It baffles me sometime how people on here conceive of football. Do they look at a striker who falls deep to lay it off and think: "what a useless action, he's supposed to score goals, not play back passes to the midfield." Football's a bit more complicated than that.

It's a fine barometer of how much a player is involved in the flow of the game. Not every involvement is going to have a direct positive impact on the game, but you still need players around who you can pass to. Otherwise it's hard to play fluid football.

    8 - Pedri

Well, it's both. 1) If he's not to help out more in the general flow of possession, then the demands for his offensive decisiveness are higher. 2) If he's not creating any real danger, then the demands for his contribution to the general flow of the game is higher. Last game he made six key...

And they're all higher than Pedri's except for Wijnaldum who's not doing so hot himself. Not significantly higher, no, but with the football we want to play, this matters.

    8 - Pedri

Well, I agree, but unfortunately football isn't golf.
  7. BusiTheKing

    8 - Pedri

Well, he was more involved last year so I'd at least want him to be up around that level. Ideally I'd want his involvement to resemble someone like De Bryune's, but clearly our passing play is much slower in general than City's so the conditions are harder (not that Pedri imo doesn't contribute...

Is your brain broken or something? There exist numbers between 33 and 100 lol.

I never said it's a good 'stat on it's own'. A player can be plenty involved in a game and still have many other issues with his game. Like someone like Puig. His overall level of involvement isn't a problem. His quality of involvement is a problem. With Pedri, his overall level of...

Yes, and Gavi is not involved enough either for the football we want to play. But he's younger, less experienced, not an established starter and not rated as highly as Pedri on here, so the discussion isn't as interesting.

Jesus, that's the biggest strawman of the year so far. Are you saying his role dictates him to be less involved with the play than players like Odegaard, De Bruyne, Saul, Denis Suarez, Moutinho, Trigueros? Because that's where he is right now. And the mention of Riqui Puig again lol. How is...

I know. And I agree. But what was the point of the comment if not to argue that number of passes pr 90 isn't a good indicator of overall performance? Which is a position I did not take.

    8 - Pedri

Yes, that's very nice, and once again, I think that Pedri did very well at the Euros, but once again, I'm not talking about his historical performances, I'm talking about how he's performing for us right now. Btw, here are Iniesta's numbers for his La Liga seasons: 09/10: 67 10/11: 85 11/12...

Right, so find me a player who you think plays the same role as Pedri and who's about the same level, and we'll see if their numbers look similar. Also, I'm not discussing how Pedri has played for Spain, I'm discussing how he plays for us right now since that is what I'm interested in.
  15. BusiTheKing

    8 - Pedri

I'm not saying they're a direct measure of how good a player is lol. Why would you assume that?

    8 - Pedri

Trying to put some numbers to the issue I have with him of not being inovlved enough in general circulation. Pedri averages 43,9 passes per 90 as a CM. These are passes per 90 for comparable players in England and Spain (only appearances registered as CM by whoscored): Thiago 86,7 Milner 75,3...

    Frenkie de Jong

Not great, but his movement was positive.

0.54 XA isn't terrible but you can't play anything resembling fluid, fast-paced football with a midfielder that completes just 33 passes in 90 minutes. That's fewer passes than Ter Stegen. Can't be done, sorry. I don't care if he fucks up 9 out of 10 actions. He has to involve himself more in...

    Xavi Hernández

I don't mind his positivity. We're not playing at the level we aspire to and everybody can see that. He's pointed it out himself quite a few times. And it hasn't changed anything. What is he gonna do, just keep criticizing us in the press game after game even though we keep sucking? That would...

    Xavi Hernández

Any way to tell how many passes Frenkie and Pedri had between them? I can see the logic behind spreading out the midfield like that but in reality, it's just not working. We can't tiki the taka without concentrating numbers in the same zone.
