Messi's touch on that goal was Bergkamp-esque. 2 perfect controls with thigh and foot before the ball ever touches the ground, all on the sprint.

    World Cup 2018

No matter how bad Iceland play (which hasn't been the case today) Argentina should approach this game as if Iceland are winning. Can't leave things to chance when things are this tight, we've seen that anything can happen in this WC. Especially when they really only have Modric out of the...

    World Cup 2018

Yeah, it's anything but over. Nigeria are getting forward very well, Perez and Mascherano have been pretty bad. Argentina need more goals and more suffocating possession in their half.

This is the best that Di Maria has been for Argentina in years I reckon. If anyone should come off it's Perez and Mascherano

The shape of the defense is completely different. There was no space behind the defense or in between the lines to get a ball like he did from Banega against Iceland. He was "static" in the forward zones which were clogged but as active as he possibly could be behind the bus, initiating the offense.

    World Cup 2018

Messi was leading the charge vs Iceland tho and it was moreso their intense compact defense that made it hard for him to receive balls behind the defensive line. You really can't have paid much attention if you think he was uninvolved then. He was just not sharp more than anything. Vs. Croatia...

    World Cup 2018

He made those last second runs all the time against Croatia and Iceland. If anything, that was the kind of movements he was trying most. Di Maria and Mascherano constantly failed to see him or find him.

Huh, would you look at that? Finally he gets an elite ball going forward and he scores. Shocker I know.

    10 - Lionel Messi - v5

Lol the lineup is better top to bottom if you really wanna go there. Patricio is 10x better than Caballero, never would've made that howler today. Defense is better with Pepe and Cedric (while Argentina have 0 competent fullbacks), midfield is 10x better with Moutinho/Carvalho. Carvalho alone is...

    10 - Lionel Messi - v5

You're crazy if you think Messi is a bigger problem than that midfield. Utterly crazy. He takes his share of the blame but by absolutely no definition is he the "main problem", I couldn't fathom believing that. Modric himself said Messi needs more help. Sampaoli outright said the team is...

    10 - Lionel Messi - v5

Patricio was great in the 2nd game, the cross for the header was good. But more than that, Portugal have a proper approach. They can actually attack on the break and in enough space to not face down 8 or 9 defenders every play. They can construct real passing moves, and create open shot...

    10 - Lionel Messi - v5

Aguero did make himself available in that way many times, they couldn't do it and he got 7 touches. Messi was open in those zones a number of times, they couldn't circumvent the pressure of the man on them to make the pass forward.

    10 - Lionel Messi - v5

He runs that much in a lot of his best performances too. It doesn't make a difference. I'm not saying he played to the best of his ability or even close, but even if he had how would that make him more available for passes that the midfield is incapable of playing? What are your thoughts on...

    10 - Lionel Messi - v5

The only better areas where he could regularly receive the ball was basically in the zones of a DM as with the game against Iceland. Receiving the ball on the run trying to find space in pockets is just not realistic with this team. They can't execute those passes.

    10 - Lionel Messi - v5

Blaming Messi for the performance unilaterally, not just the loss. There was no platform to perform, none. A player needs the support and the right environment to perform, and there was none. Like the 7-0 against Bayern too, he simply had no place to make a difference. Only maybe if he had taken...

    10 - Lionel Messi - v5

I would mention how 8 out of 11 starters for Argentina have no business in any top division of football, literally Segunda level players (including Mascherano). But that's only half the story. The tactics and formation were absolutely rubbish by Sampaoli and there is no gameplan on how to...

    10 - Lionel Messi - v5

It's like people here forget that Argentina went over 11 months just last year with NO ONE scoring for the NT except Messi. He is that team, from top to bottom. There has never been a bigger dependence on a single player from any team ever.

    Luka Modrić

I'd say Modric isn't as far off Iniesta or Zidane as you'd like to think. I'd put him right in the tier below. Modric was the best player in the CL final of 3/4 of their victories. Even in 2016/17 he did definitively more in the final than CR. Neither Iniesta nor Zidane have done that at club...

    10 - Lionel Messi - v5

You were calling him shite when he dropped deep to pick up the ball constantly last game and create everything because, as stated previously, THEY CANNOT ADVANCE THE BALL. Period. Nada. No matter the movement, no matter anything, he would not have gotten the ball if he wasn't in the midfield...

    10 - Lionel Messi - v5

Yeah, those shuffles and movements would've been real dangerous. While Mascherano dances left/right ponderously on the ball only to pass it sideways or lose the ball trying to find him. You could put 10/11 Messi in there today, they still lose 3-0. No less.
