The shape of the defense is completely different. There was no space behind the defense or in between the lines to get a ball like he did from Banega against Iceland. Yeah, those shuffles and movements would've been real dangerous. While Mascherano dances left/right ponderously on the ball only to pass it sideways or lose the ball trying to find him. You could put 10/11 Messi in there today, they still lose 3-0. No less.
