Unfortunately, football is not a track and field discipline where coming to terms with reality is too ruthless.
In his case, the reality is also conditioned by a big club expectations where the slightest moments of mediocrity are pointed out.
For his own sake, if he wants to be more active and still play an influential striker role, I'd recommend him go to Italy and join a renowned but struggling club...AS Roma, Lazio, or Fiorentina which always welcomes soon to be retirees.
Staying here would not do much good for pure sport merits. Unless he wants to taper off, ...hang on for 1 more year to enjoy Catalonian climate and cuisine.

As you insinuate, it's a double edged sword.

The same thing that made he and Ronaldo such determined to win guys, and obsessive with their scoring in their prime, is the same thing causing them to not let go when they have lost that athletic and goalscoring spark. And also stops them from being happy to be a super sub and instead them wanting to play every game.
