Pretty Possession without penetration has always been an overrated style of play

Does nothing except increasing the probability of making a fatal error

Possession is utterly useless without progressive patterns of play followed by real chance creating actions in the final third

So many people think possession is always an attacking tool or tactic. It isn't. Possession can be defensive and negative too. Like the 2010 Spain team which bored teams to death by retaining possession and playing keepball. And that's horrendous to watch. Worse than exhilarating counter attacks.

City got done by their lack of technique. Which is funny for a Pep side. They lost that technical aspect they had, and now are what Madrid like.

It's not overrated to watch imo - it can be beautiful to watch when did with intent and trying to create chances. Where I agree with you is it's overrated as a winning tactic when two big teams come up against each other.

The idea that the more you have of the ball - whether in your own half or squeezing high to look for a goal in the opposition half - the more you risk, is something I fully agree with.

But when a possession team wins, it is much more dominant and better to watch than a counter team - eg prime Barca are remembered as the best team ever, unlike prime Real. And Man City are generally seen as a superior team to Ferguson's United teams. Outside of real and united fans and people who like Ronaldo.

But yes, there's definitely a split between preferring fast counter or patient, probing build up.
