Yeah Laporta isn't a saint and perhaps xavis words probably lie somewhere in the middle.
However this is just him throwing shit at the wall in attempt to help font in hopes he can swing the dudes terrible campaign.

As an outsider who doesn't care about Barca, it's irrelevant to the current Barca that has successfully been rebuilt. Messi's astronomical wages would hinder the rebuild in a very tricky period for Barca financially. But this trick will definitely work with the emotional fanbase that loves Messi more than their own families. The timing of this statement is great by Font and Xavi. Playing the emotion card tends to work on Football fans. But I assume that Laporta is already way more supported than Font so he'll still win.
