Love Pedri, but what is he actually offering in that double marking situation? He’s really just tracking with his eyes.
Cubarsí also went in very late on Vini.
Koundé got nutmegged, not great defending, but it happens.
Overall, it was a great goal, but also very poor defending.
I'm telling you, they underestimated Vini. If this was 2022 version of Vini he is never scoring this goal

Pedri especially

Thought he would fumble it. Or relied on Joan to do something

Should not happen, but it's understandable tbh

Neither Pedri nor FdJ are defensive mids. It's like playing with Xavi and Iniesta double pivot without Busquets or Modric and Kroos without Casemiro. Would be better defensively to put Garcia behind them but then you take out the #10, have 37 year old striker who waits for service, Raphinha who also gets at the end of passes and the entire creative burden falls on 18 year old Yamal. We would be more solid defensively but completely limp going forward.

I would maybe consider 4-3-3 for big CL games though. I think defense is more important in knockout games than firepower but that's just my armchair thinking. Hansi should know better.

It’s probably technique-wise the most difficult goal vini scored in Europe.

I see some people argue “it’s still a foul”.

But at what point when someone starts to dive this early will ref attribute him going to ground to the player himself actually attempting to fall!

So it’s also pen now cause hypothetically there would be contact if he stayed on feet?
It's hard to tell because refs genuinely don't give fouls if players try to stay up, that's one of the reasons why they don't.

Refs and VAR don't check for those kind of fouls even if they are obvious. A player going to ground is essentially 'i've been fouled' rather than literally having to fall, in many cases.
