Lionel Messi - v7

If I could pick any player in the world for a decisive CL match right now (and in the past 4 or so years), I'm not picking Messi. No way. I'd gladly take Lewa.

Lewa has gone from underrated to one of the most overrated players in the world.

He was so good in the past 4 seasons, that he led Bayern to an incredible number of 1 CL, and that in a season with a global pandemic. By ''led'' I mean, he was the scorer in a well oiled machine.

I think that with his current form,Messi is probably top 3-5 in the world. Sometimes he is overrated in the past couple seasons, but he is still great. Just not undisputable best anymore. And if you think about it really,it's been the same the last 4-5 years or so,with the exception of 2019.

IMO, best in the world since 2014-2015, where Messi was head and shoulders above everyone else.

2015-2016: Suarez (58 goal season)
2016-2017: CR7
2017-2018: Tough one, but maybe CR7 slightly over Messi due to the Roma fiasco. Messi had an amazing league season though.
2018-2019: Messi, easily
2019-2020: Lewandowski?
2020-2021: Lewandowski?

Messi was the best player in 2016/17 as well, only won the cup that year but he was the best player all season.

Haha stats, trophies and hindsight clouds judgement.
Except 2013-14(injuries) and last season Messi has easily been the best footballer in the world since 2008.
When it comes to pure football, goalscorers for stacked teams cant hold a candle to a dribbling, playmaking football demi god that puts up similair or better numbers.

All players above are elite goalscorer, something that Messi is also. He is also an elite playmaker, dribbler and insanely consistent.

17-18: Salah for me, everything else the same.

17/18: Messi 48 goals all comps, golden boot winner, domesyic double. Salah 44 goals all comps, premier league top scorer, no tittle (only UCL runner up).

Messi also led all of playmaking stats in Laliga.

I think Messi's 17/18 is underrated but still Salah leads for me.

This is my scoring on an individual level

League:
Messi - 10/10
Salah - 9/10

CL:
Messi - 8/10
Salah - 9/10

Even if I still think EV is the most responsible for that Roma Away game, Messi still had one or two moments in which he could have been clutch. The fact that Salah was excellent throughout two big competitions means that he takes first spot for me.

When did 1 CL in 4 years become a bad thing?

You cant measure everything by goals. Lewy is a clinical striker in the box. He obviously cannot dribble, control the ball or create like Messi. A ludicrous argument.

I think Messi can still be the best in the world but only for possesion teams with high quality midfieldes. For a team like City, Messi would be better than anyone. However, most of the other big teams would probably rather have Lewy, CR, or Mbappe than Messi.
