Cou and Pedri will rotate in the AM position, and he is to weak for now to be in a double pivot. He must leave on loan to improve his defensive game, and become stronger, so he can try next season to challenge Pjanic for his spot alongside Frenkie.

Indeed. He's more Iniesta than Xavi type.

Imo, to some extent, this is one thing that happens lately:
1. In 90s, when Seria A was like NBA, majority of teams played 352.
In 352, majority of teams had 2 defensive minded midfielders and one true CAM, a number 10 from 90s, who was the brain of the team: a creator, an assistant, a scorer.
Those were players like Totti, Del Piero, Kaka, Nakata, Boban.

Back then, two defensive midfielders needed defensive skills, physique and workrate.
And a CAM was always lurking around the box.

Now, the thing is, in 90s, teams didn't use TRUE CMs like Xavi and Iniesta.
You were either a defensive workhorse-passer pivot or a CAM.

And then, in 2000s, with 433, teams moved from two pivots-one CAM to two true CMs.
Those CMs became guys who recycle possession.
Also, in 352 you had only 2 attackers, so a CAM was the 3rd most attacking player.
With switching to 433, teams suddenly had 3 natural attackers, so there was no need for shooting skills from CMs as much as in 352.

And then, after Xavi, Iniesta, and Pep's and Spanish success, clubs started to teach kids to play in Xavi-Iniesta 433 way.
For example, Arthur and Puig look like children of that era.
None of them are good in defending.
None of them can score, except that Puig can assist.

But now, try to put Arthur and Puig in 90s.
They don't fit.
They are too weak for pivots.
And they aren't lethal in attack.

With 4231 lately, that formation looks more like 352 from 90s than like 433.

CAMs who can score are suddenly key players.
And combative physical workhorses are awesome at a double pivot.
If more teams will move towards 4231 in the future, that will be a death for Spanish type of CMs like Arthur and Puig.

The same as how CAMs were dead from 2008-2018, when all teams played 433 with two "Barca type of possession-recycle based CMs", the same fate could hit these type of CMs in the future.

In 4231, there is no room for goalscoring wise-sterile attackers and CAMs.

You know how we often hear on our forum: the duty of a CM is not to score but to control the match.
That was true from around 2005 onwards.
Before that it was different.
And from now on, the rules and requirements might change again.

My question is how pedri is ahead of puig as a coutinho back up? That AM position suits him

Pedri looks more of a forward than Puig that's the reason why. Puig is a great option in a midfield 3. But as soon as we went from 3 midfielders and 3 forwards, to 2 midfielders and 4 forwards, he was the victim of this system change.

This is yet another redundant heap of hot garbage. Coutinho hasn't been playing anywhere close to the mode of italian regista of 90s, but more like a roaming cm/am hybrid. Does a lot of work centrally and deeper and, when there's opportunity, attacks the box. P. much the same Puig has done. Goal scoring is irrelevant. That's just another shift of goal post to conjure fresh narrative of why you dislike Puig.

His pace could have helped us today. Imagine playing De Jong at CAM
and thinking Puig cannot do it even though he played CAM vs Atleti? Koeman will ruin him.

After seeing Pedri-Trincao shitshow, even I (as a hater) would give a chance to Puig now.

Pedri is a total wtf for now.

Koeman wont play him out of principle and stubbornness. He needs to leave on loan until next season as I don’t expect Koeman survives longer than a season rightly or wrongly.
