European Super League

What's stopping them from making it a 48 team Champions League 10 years from now.... and teams will have to play way more than just 10 league games. The Champions League teams could honestly eventually play 25 to 30 games if UEFA has its way.

Can't hike it too much or players will unionise.

It's been out for a few months. Has most of the elements of the ESL, even the safe spots for historically successful teams, even if not as blunt as in the ESL.

Uefa's only problem with the ESL was they weren't part of it. And interventions happened to protect Uefa, not football. Or whatever they say these days.

True. Football still needs reforms. Just not with Perez and co. doing it the gangsta way.

I read Levy's statement regarding Spurs pulling out and it sounded like he wanted to stay in but left because every other club wanted to leave. Liverpool, Arsenal and Man Utd didn't sound like they wanted to leave at all. The only 2 teams that were probably on the fence about it were City and Chelsea.

In City's and Chelsea's case it was urgent as they are still competing for this years Champions League.

Just read the new Champions League format and it sounds like the Super League but without being strictly super teams. This could be bad. What's stopping them from making it a 48 team Champions League 10 years from now.... and teams will have to play way more than just 10 league games. because that's what this corrupt organization does. ethics, integrity and competitiveness were thrown out the window the moment when it wasn't just about the league champions getting in the CL.

so now they want to appease everyone and dump more money on big clubs. there will be more small teams happy to join the CL cash cow but in the end they'll be fed crumbles. and we'll have this borefest that some naive idiots call a sporting competition, where man city obliterates maccabi haifa in group games and then plays 3-4 meaningful games in order to reach the final.

the super league would have been much more interesting with clubs of same size that didn't have to cater to UEFA's needs. also, the other clubs would really have competed for something and get a sense of involvement. not just be sparing partners that are happy to cash out and keep their mouth shut.

What's wrong with these statements? It's obvious Boris Johnson and co. weren't happy about it and wanted to pressure clubs into forgoing the ESL. They didn't hide it really.

More than that, Bobo was gaining political points with outraged fans.

Perhaps Perez can have the super league be between RM A and B team, possibly set up more teams to make it work.

Cant drop out if you run all of the clubs.

Need to fix your fitness staff for that to happen dawg. You have more CL's than match fit players.

That's probably Perez and co.'s biggest mistake. No campaign on their behalf bar his horrendous interview to support the ESL let Uefa and BoJo have fans on their side.

I'd prefer a slightly different concept, though. Possibly league A and B with founding clubs having safe spots but relegation and promotion made possible.

It's what it is.

Agnelli still doesn't get it, maybe none of them do. If you're going to blame Boris, then just point the finger at the entire UK, because there was no way they were gonna let this go down without a fight (unlike Spain, who just shrugged and bent over for Papa Perez like normal). It's not about our politics, Brexit, or any of that. Football means so much to so many people here, for some people (whatever you think of them) it's their whole life, and they'd be damned if they went down without fighting this.

The English reaction, not just from the fans, media, and government but also from the players, was instrumental in stopping this. By all accounts, the players were ready to go on strike to stop it happening.

Pointing the finger at politics really betrays a complete failure to understand why this failed, from Agnelli. It wasn't politics that brought down this grubby plan, but passion and love for the game.

Basically a Super Real Madrid League. It won’t work since your first team will win the trophy every year with zero suspense.

However I hope he does it, since that will be the only thing that forces Laporta to get us out of it.

Nah, the safe spots is still based on merits and aren't arbitrary.
Also, ESL had a problem of 15 out of 20 clubs guaranteed places for 23 years, leaving just 5 spots to fight for.
This kills the turnover in the game tbh, if it was 5-8 founder clubs it would have been easier pill to swallow.

Nah, Laporta will announce they are out of it soon enough.
