Defender for next season?

Puyol the wall

Why? He is without a doubt one of the best CBs in the world (if not the best) and is also perfectly suited to Barcelona's game. He is excellent defensively, great in the air and amazingly fast. In fact his speed would be so valuable when playing a 3 man back line.

To say 35m is too much just because he is a defender is purely idiotic, especially in this current market. Have you seen what sort of players go for that!? Carrol, Aguero (+3m), Torres (+15m), Coentrao, Fabregas (and that was when we got a 'bargain' because he only wanted us) etc etc.

I'm not saying he is the only suitable defender as Hummels / Martinez are also great options I think, especially considering their age. But saying that a world-class CB who could be playing in our XI for 5+ years is too much for 35m just makes me laugh.
Yeah i agree with most of the points but if we sign him for 35m it will be the most expensive defensive signing ever, consider his age and we pay 35m for him there is always a chance of him under performing and we will not be able to sell for even half of what we bought him for after 2 years.Defenders are valued at less cost than strikers and midfielders it looks crazy considering how important they are to a team but that is the way the market goes.
He is one of the best CB in the world and i would be glad if we signed him but the price should be less than 25m.

I'm not sure that's a defensive record for the sport (though it may be one for Barcelona as a club). Nesta was sold from Lazio to Milan for 30 million and that was quite some time ago. Rio Ferdinand went for crazy money when he moved to United. And I believe (surprisingly cos I don't think he's anywhere near the other two) Pepe went for crazy money from Porto to Madrid.

I think it's Alves, but I'm not 100% sure

For those who want a star CB like Hummels or Silva, what do you think will happen with Masche and Piqué? I doubt they'll be okay with spending 33%+ of the games on the bench. You also don't rotate defenders like you do for other positions. Stability is key. So basically, one of them has to go.

I'd prefer if we'd buy a solid back-up, preferably very tall, who can also play DM.

I don't think mascherano should be counted on as a starting centerback. I'd put him on rotation for that position and for the Biscuits position.

Yet we have got 2 good CB's in Puyol and Pique i don't understand why the guys want a world class CB the reason might be Pique's attitude recently or they don't believe in Puyol playing regularly. But i don't think we have to spend big on a CB buy a LB and we are ready to kick off next season.

One of the biggest problems i have with signing Silva is the age factor. He's already 28.

I don't mind spending big money on some one who's very young but signing someone who is close to his 30's is a risk. But the CB position at Barca needs urgent upgrading otherwise you can bet your sweet ass that we will miss out on the major trophies next season as well.

Signing a CB is not one of the priorities for me only a LB cause, once Pique reaches top form and with Puyol too it doesn't look bad does it.

You're seriously counting on a centerback in his mid-30s to play the entire season with no injury? That's hopeful.

^ well there's masch as well. but i agree, asking for at least 2 to be fit at all times and on form may be a bit too much so I concur with those asking for Tiago Silva.

We should try to replace Puyol while he's still with us and can play 30 games/year, not after he's gone(kind of like what we're doing with Xavi). And I don't want Thiago Silva at Barca because he would be too expensive for his age and the CBs coming from Serie A have rarely made it in La Liga.

If we don't buy a CB, then Bartra rotating with Piqué, and Masch rotating with Puyol shouldn't be a problem. And depending on how Bartra performs, we can decide on a CB purchase for the subsequent season.

Either way, i just don't want to see the Puyol-Masch tandem in the big games next season.
