Yeah, I'd say it is about time that the BD is not automatically tied to us or Real Madrid winning major titles, regardless of the actual performance of these two players in the year. Give someone else a chance.

Who else would win it though? MSN won't win it or any Barca player unless Barca manage to win La Liga and Madrid go trophyless. If a Madrid player wins it it'll be Penaldo.

Messi was the best player in the world from 2009 to 2016. You could have made a case for Ribery in 2013 or Neuer in 2014.

Chelsea aren't even in Europe and no international tournament for Belgium. A Premier League player probably won't make the podium. It'd need a Juve, PSG or Bayern to win the treble or something with Lewandowski, Cavani or Higuain scoring shitloads of goals.

IS, not was. Messi is still the best player in the world by a big margin but the BD should be given to a player whose PERFORMANCE is worth noting and awarding, not just based on one's status or how many trophies his team has won.

I actually think performance wise Messi was better than Ronaldo last year, despite the silver Ronaldo won. Goes to show how ridiculous the award has become.

Who knows? Bale could edge it as he's looking far more important to that Real Madrid side than Ronaldo ATM. Depending on who wins the CL, Cavani is scoring for fun this season and is the top scorer in Europe. If he carries them to the CL trophy, it could be his. We all know how important stats are to the Ballon d'Or.
Juve is another favourite to win the CL with how they are playing this season, and then the media would start talking about Dybala, so he is another candidate. With how he and Higuain are linking up right now, don't underestimate Juve.

Of course Messi was better than Ronaldo last year and is still the best player by a wide margin now.

It's ridiculous that Ronaldo has won 3 of the last 4 Ballon D'ors as he's declined (inevitably now 4 out of 5) while Messi is still top class regularly and needed to carry Barca to a treble just win 1 of the last 4.
