All Argentina need to do is qualify. If they manage to do that, which is by no means a sure thing and also manage to make it out of their group, anything is possible.
I have no doubt in my mind that a team like Argentina with the firepower in attack they posses can catch fire for 4 matches and take the World Cup. International matches are generally low scoring anyways and Argentina have proven not to concede too many goals in past major tournaments. Nobody expected Argentina to do jack squat in Brazil either, but good defending and timely goals carried them all the way to the final.
There are still 9 months left until Russia 2018 and a lot can happen between now and then; Sampaoli can figure out the tactics, Dybala and Icardi could turn out good, or Argentina can get a favorable draw.
Anyone writing of Argentina's chances of winning the World Cup (if they qualify) needs to have their head examined. Each team only plays a maximum of 7 games. There are no two-legged ties, nor is this tournament a league. Any team with star players can catch fire or get a bit lucky before the tournament and go on to win the entire thing.

for the record, i'm not too happy with messi's performances in those later international stage games either, but to suggest he was walking or invisible or disinterested is categorically insane.

It’s the damnedest thing. At least Barcelona has some promise in that area with Denis and Aleñá waiting in the wings.

I really really hope Argentina qualify. The problem in the squad is mental. Even so it's apparent the team lacks the fire they had in 2014. Mentally the team is weaker, especially after three consecutive lost finals (Germany in WC 2014 and Chile 2015 & 2016). The only good thing about the current Argentina squad is Lionel Messi being in fantastic form and so is Dybala. But it won't be enough no matter what. This isn't 1986 where Maradona single-handedly (literally
) won it all. Football changed a lot since then. Some people here accuse Messi of disappearing in semi finals/finals. Well, when you are constantly pressured/marked by 2-3 defenders and midfielders it's time for someone else to shine. Just like the 2015 CL final against Juventus in which Messi wasn't much involved, others stole the show. But it was still a triumph, right?

It wouldn't be that bad if he hadn't thrown in that comment 'real leader of a nation' to go along with the retweet. It became a clear jab for god knows what reason. Still holding 'disgrace' grudge
