Messi has an option to rescind his contract with Barca after this season, something Xavi, Iniesta and Puyol also had. His contract initially runs out in 2021 and he's not willing to sit on the negotiating table right now. I think it's probably because he doesn't want to be used as a tool for this board's succession plan for the elections in 2021.

I'm not one to speculate but there are reports saying that Messi is unhappy with the board for not bringing Neymar back and some even suggest that the attempt to bring Neymar back was just an attempt to please Messi and that we were never seriously interested. If Messi believes that, then the board is in trouble.

You think that Messi is mad at the board because they didnt sign Neymar..really? & we were interested in Neymar otherwise Abidal and Co. wouldnt have went to Paris twice to try to get him. We just couldnt afford it. Cadena Ser is just reporting what they think, not what actually happened. I really doubt Messi is that angry at Barto that we didnt bring Neymar back. Remember, the media is always trying to make out Messi as this little dictator who decides everything that happens at Barca, when that is not the case. Sure, he played a part in wanting Neymar back (as did other senior players) but the board wasnt going to spend 150m+ on a player just to please Messi.

The fact he has a clause in his contract to be able to retire or leave for an Argentinian club every year after this one is not very promising.
The club only being confident in him staying for two more years is very alarming as well.
It is clear at this point he is not going to stay here beyond age 35. 3-4 seasons at the very most left of Leo.
