Pele is trying make comparisons so that he can show he is better than Messi,he is using others for his own ego this kind of a guy should have never won the player of the century award.

I'm happy Pele won it, because having to share the honour with Maradona is the biggest imaginable punishment for Pele.

Guys just because pele says shit, it doesnt mean he sucks...He is BY FAR the best player to play the game...and i mean BY FAR...you guys are probably not old enough to have watched him play, so go ask your grandparents, or older people that understand about football.

"Messi, potentially the best player that has ever kicked a ball"

Seriously? just because he plays for your team? I'd rather take a prime Pele, Maradona, Carlos Alberto, Zico, Garrincha, Ronaldinho, Zidane, Ronaldo, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Riquelme, Romario, and, yes, probably Neymar (unless it was a team with Barcelona's playstyle) over Messi any day of the week.

But again, some Lakers fans think Kobe Bryant is the greatest of all time and not Michael Jordan, so... I won't hate too much on you.

I'm surprised he didn't mention Robinho and Rivaldo too, or Socrates. Maybe Denilson was better than Messi too, he sure did more stepovers!

Nobody questioned Pele he is one of the greatest players of all time but Messi isn't so much worse than him.Messi is doing things in a time where it is more harder, when Pele played there weren't many professional players but now football is a professional sport and to do what Messi does in this era you are underestimating him too much.

All these cross-century comparisons between players and teams are so useless. Training and tactics developed so much that there is no points in doing it. The Pele of the 60ies - if he would do a timewarp to 2012 - would have a hard time getting into a 3rd or 4th division team nowadays.

Thus its hard to argue against the currently best player being the best player of all times. Its just natural.

am I really supposed to argue with this? ok then the argument I'll provide you with will be : okay bro, roll on. and perhaps I should be thanking you for not hating on me too much?
thank you

And just for the prime Neymar you mentioned, you understand that as a footballer, physically and mentally, Leo Messi has not hit his prime yet, right?

Well I don't agree that the current best player is inherently the greatest of time just because they have the privilege of playing with the latest training, fitness and technology - this is all hypothetical after all, we don't have a time machine so when making these speculations, I always assume we are imagining everything else equal. But it does make the comparisons trivial at best, especially as the distance in time increases. Messi alone would probably beat the entire 1930 Uruguay squad, because they were a bunch of amateurs, even if they were the best in the world.

It always gets me when someone states that you can't have an opinion if you didn't watch Pele live, because they know it's a great way to end the discussion. This isn't basketball or hockey where talent is concentrated enough that you can tell when someone like Jordan or Gretzky is significantly better than their peers.

theres no timeswap...and u gotta give the players from back then, the same structure and the same opportunities if u try to use that as an argument, those guys didnt have all the opportunities the players have today..remember that back then there were no cards, you could foul as much as you want too.

To the guy that said rivaldo...i never liked him much, not as a world class player, but maybe that's me. I seen riquelme ply in his prime in a boca juniors game and he was that good, but again, that's me, I'm not saying he's the greatest (he's in the bottom of my list in case you haven't noticed). Also, ive never seen a striker as good as romario to just put a ball into the net, inside the area, it was goal.

Messi might not not have reached his prime yet, but so didnt neymar, we gotta compare what we have today. Neither did nothing really yet for their national teams (which is the most important to me)...I like both, but I would take messi if it was a team with barcas playstyle, controlling the ball on the offensive field with lots of passing and i would take neymar if it was a counter-attack team.
You may call me dumb but I played soccer for many years at a level you can't imagine, I know my shit, but we're not talking about me.

Yeah, I've seen you play back then and I thought: Pele and Maradona have nothing on this guy. That's why you call it soccer I guess.
