we already paying the same as messi for some bums who never did anything for this club. add the salaries of coutinho, griezmann, dembele and de jong and you get about the same if not more. not only they didn't do anything of note here, but not a single one is better then messi today. you could argue that their combined output is lower than what messi brought last season.

so from a salary standpoint messi is payed fairly, considering the current market.

Contracts are signed with a couple of years added to them up to even 5 years. Messi signed his renewal in 2017 and then a year later played a season where he was voted best player in the world.

Peak Messi was clearly underpaid if anything. Let's not even get on to the money he's brought in through extra sponsorship money, tickets sales, merch, prize money etc etc.

Yeah his last very good performance was 2017 in Bernabeu when Messi used the GOAT-tissue-Mode. Messi from 2007-2014 was always on fire when he has to play against Real Madrid but since then he sees this match as a normal la liga match.

The point is, he could have got it somewhere else, so hasn't really fleeced us, especially since he signed the contract in 2017 and gave 2 excellent seasons and an okay one. If he signed one now for the same amount it wouldn't be worth it.

There are players in this squad who don't contribute anything, are overpaid but the rich oil teams don't go near them with all their money to waste.

most other big clubs couldn't afford or wouldn't pay that kind of salary even when he was in his prime. then again, juventus broke their wage structure and signed a ronaldo heading for retirement. so your argument is invalid either way.

there are two points to consider here:
a. messi wanting to leave to another club - this alone eliminates 99% of options as he wouldn't go anywhere
b. if all clubs would have been given the same chance to sign him(aka messi being pimped around for the highest bidder) how many were in a position to compete with the oil clubs?

I think you're mistake 2018-19 and the 2019-20 season, because 2018-19 was one of his best.
