There is no other option than play Messi centrally. He creates most danger there and doesn't have stamina to play wide anyway. Case closed.

Issue is with Suarez. He doesn't have the skillets to play wide and we find it hard to cover for both him and Messi off the ball. I guess we can do with 4-4-2 against 90% of teams but Valverde will have to think of something else against others.

We need fresh legs more than anything else. I just have to think of Davids and what kind of difference he made in few months he was here. If we manage to bring aggression and kms up, I am sure Messi, Coutinho and co. will take care of the rest.

Messi is going to hurt us unless we accept that he is not a striker nor a winger. He is still a great player and worth changing our formation to maximize his ability. We also need to acknowledge that his technicality is still as good as it has ever been and will still be good for a few more years.

Physically, he was done a few years ago and will not get any better. Unlike CR7 who aged better because of his impressive physique.

I personally believe that we should play him as a CAM + CF; therefore, we need a light striker to adapt. Villa, Mbappe, Martial etc.

Coutinho ST Dembele
- Messi
Busquets Arthur

Griezmann would have been perfect for us, but he made his choice, unfortunately.

Alternatively, we could what we did back in 2010/11

LW Messi Dembele
Coutinho Busquets Arthur

The LW must be goal-scorer, again Villa, Mbappe, Martial, but not Griezmann in this formation.

He isn't done physically, thats nonsense, he's lost some explosiveness and pace but thats normal, he's 31 now, he still has great acceleration (look at his goal in the world cup) on the first few metres.
Again, i don't get this obsession with his running or wanting to change his position.
He just had another succesfull season and is still playing more or less the same as he always has.
What the hell do you people expect? A treble every season?
The only thing i agree with is that he won't get better physically but thats normal, no one really does after 30.

Busi and Rakitic together is too slow. They cant co-exist.

I dont know. We probably need a Busi back-up, someone who is more dominant in terms of physicality and workrate. Time to embrace modern football.

Barca and Spain are both far too slow and pedestrian. The modern game is about pace, energy and incisiveness (as well as quality obviously) and Mbappe is the prototype. Physicality also important due to all the set piece goals these days.

Barca just had a great generation come through the youth together (two all time greats in Xavi and Iniesta) and also one of the greatest ever in Messi who could mask any flaws. Even now we're still winning titles with a mediocre side thanks to him but are exposed in Europe when he has quiet games and doesn't win them on his own like Chelsea.

Let me be clear, so there is no misunderstanding.

We are talking about tactical options, not Messi as a person/player.

Having said that, i don t accept that he has no stamina to play position x. The guy is one of the best paid pro athletes on the planet. He should be in optimal shape. I think he hasn t lost much speed.
Also, i don t understand why he wouldn t be able to play as RW or CAM in the 3 man midfield. His skill diversity is a feature, that s just screaming to be exploited. In fact, it is this feature, that made me think he is going to age better, than CR.

Let me answer your question. I agree with you, the last season was a success. But this is Barca, we want to play beautiful football on a highest possible level and win everything. In order to do so, we have to think one step ahead, which Pep did.
After that, we went through "sleep mode", while Xavi-Iniesta-Alves faded. The treble with fresh Neymar/Suarez was an uptick, but the dependence on Leo only got stronger. Let s not repeat that fading cycle again. We are only discussing different options for our main player. If tactical dependency on him is reduced, which is a main issue, it s quite possible, we can have him play similarly to last season.

Personally, i would like to see him in MF. Imagine having problems with creativity, with him in the centre and Coutinho and Dembele on wings. The opposition would have to set the "Messi wall" in the centre, which would open space on the flanks. Perfect. I think this is the easiest way to solve our midfield problem. Just get one Kante type guy near him and it s done. Finding the right combination of MF players is apparently much more difficult than it sounds, since this is an issue for quite some time now. Why not have the best player on the planet right in the heart of the team?

If Ronaldo does end up at Juve, there'll be no excuses regarding teammates for Messi if Ronaldo outperforms him in the champions league again.

I can already see this forum filled with people acting like Khedira and Matuidi are better than Xavi and Iniesta if he wins a 4th straight CL with Juve next year.

Judoman is right in a certain sense, Messi kind of limits the team tactically and you could see his lack of movement is hurting the team in big games.

I still think in Barca Messi is still more motivated than he is in Argentina, but I kind of don't like when Messi waits for the ball to go to him, sometimes he is even in the way of his teammates when they are on the ball and they feel the need to pass to him bcos he's blocking the way. It's even more prominent in Argentina because they are all moving sideways and chances are they bump into Messi just standing there.

I think the best option is to just put Messi in the RW and let him drift inwards. Defenders would be less likely to crowd the flanks. Then have someone cover Messi's right wing post like Dembele, just interchange positions and make it a whole lot more unpredictable. Rather than restricting Messi to the central park like an CAM which makes it harder for Barcelona to create in the middle as most would just man mark Messi like crazy.

I'm a big fan of Messi but he needs to adapt because he is too much of a focal point for oppositions tactically. Like they say, Messi needs to be a puzzle piece, not a centerpiece. On the ball, Messi is still producing but off the ball it is hurting his output especially in bigger games. Not saying he is to blame for the losses but certainly the gameplay can be more improved and we could be more lethal and unpredictable for opponents, who already know how we function with Messi every season. Things need to change abit.

I agree.

I would stick Messi on RW and when the game is won let him roam loose then.

The team need to play without him .

It's as if the fans, people watching on tv , players on pitch are always seeing where Messi is. It's hard to focus on the rest of the teams play lol.

He isn't a midfielder, he should play closer to goal then has done the last 2 seasons not even further away.

Anyway the reality is that barça probably won't buy another top forward so he will remain the clubs main goalscorer with Suarez after him just like this season.

When he was 20, he wasn t a forward and yet here we are. Things change.

But i agree, he will probably stay as a FW paired with Suarez.

If Ronaldo wins UCL with Juventus I am really not sure how you could spin that.
