Samuel Umtiti

Another really good performance and surely the most impressive player (along with Messi as usual) of the season ... + he can play as a left back when needed (I would brag that I was wishing to sign him from the start of the summer, but yet, I was also happy for Gomez so ...)

Now let's reunite him with Tolisso for next season...

We should only buy from Ligue 1 from now on. I think they're the only league that have consistently given us good transfers in the past ~15 years

Ronaldinho, Yaya, Umtiti, etc. Have we had a single flop from there in the past 15 years?

Just wait an see. When we get a competent coach who can organize our backline, Samuel will quickly be acknowledged as one of the best CBs in the world.

Needless to say, he's shattered my expectations of him for his first season.

It's a great feeling to know we can have a guy as good as him in our backline for the next decade.

It goes back to an interesting point. why is it that Robert can find what Barca needs from a CB.

I mean look at all the CB's he scouted Lemos,Sanchez,Malang Sarr. Just some of the few, and the ones we signed in the Summer, Marlon(B team with 1st team prospects) and Umtiti. you know what all those CB's we looked at and signed? all them are good on the ball and is one of the main things we need from a CB.

Why is it that Robert etc, struggle at applying those things to other Key areas of the squad? The main RB we have been linked with Bellerin, isn't good enough on the ball from what we need and all the Midfielders we got bar Iniesta,Busi are all not good enough on the ball from what we need in the Midfield.

I just don't get it really.

Cb's scouts are good, or he got lucky. Seeing the other players he signed, and the ones were being linked to for cm and rb, makes Umtit look like a lucky signing.

More likely to be pure luck. He was signed with the idea for the future, a replacement for the ageing Mascherano, but instead Samuel's impact was immediate.

Its not a lucky signing, he was one of the biggest talent in France and already well known. What lucky is that Robert actually signed him and that he didn't cost that much.

We apparently have been following Umtiti, since the Zubi days. but following and actually signing a player are two different things, We should be fortunate that Robert/Board didn't make a mistake on this one.

I think the only thing Lucho got right this season was making Umtiti a starter. I thought he would just get Mathieu's minutes while Pique-Mascherano play the big games, but I was proven wrong.

I prefer him as a LB in a 3 defense system, So we can get a real CB who knows nothing else other than being a CB.
Umtiti is sometimes too gentle to be a CB IMO.

I get a different impression. He seems tough. And can handle opponents in 1 vs 1. I think he is a Barca-type CB. If we somehow manage to find a way to apply more pressure in the opponent's half, and reduce the number of balls that are played by the opponent directly on our backline (as a result of not applying any pressure in the first two thirds), Umtiti will be golden.

I agree, he has the potential to be the next Puyol for this club.

Very happy with him. For a CB, one bad game can overshadow 10 pretty good ones so I'm glad he hasn't paid overall for his tendency to make unforced errors. That's the one aspect of his game he can improve upon.
