Sergi Samper

True, but...

... I don't see him becoming a CM in the long run.

And btw, Samper is a better DM than Gomes for sure.

I definitely agree that he's a better DM than Gomes (With him being an actual DM who was trained to be a DM here), but Gomes costed big money, and we all know money trumps talent. This has been consistent with Lucho.

We have to remember that Lucho is coming towards the end of his years at Barça.

Samper will be 22 in a Month.

I wouldn't say that Gomes is better ONLY because he costed a lot of money.

Samper with 22 years played only at Barca B.
He is meh for now at Granada, no NT matches, and an interest from big teams (Arsenal) isn't here anymore.

Gomes at similar age played 1 season for Benfica, 2 seasons for Valencia, 37 matches for youth Poruguese NT teams and 17 NT matches for Ateam of Portugal. He played a lot on Euros for an NT team which will eventually won that Euro.
He also attracted an interest from Barca, Real and Man Utd.

Samper's only highs in his career till now are:
1. he is coming from La Masia
2. Xavi said good things about him a few years ago
3. he had some U-NT matches in his career

In this moment, Samper is much closer to becoming the next Bartra, who will get exposed in all clubs NOT only because he didn't play regularly at Barca, but because he is just not good enough for the highest level, than becoming Barca's starter or Gomes' level.

Till now, people are still hoping and offering tons of classical alibis like in Deulo's, Bartra's, Halil's and similar cases:
1. he didn't get a chance at Barca
2. he needs a regular playing time
3. Barca's coach doesn't love him for some reason
4. coaches in other teams don't love him for some reason
5. or, playing style of a team where he is loaned does not suit him well and this is why he isn't shining like he should

Just watch Samper and Gomes play at DM and you'll see who's most comfortable in the position. And the DM is the most important position in Barça's style. Completely neglecting the fact that you have a guy who has played this role in this system his whole life for a box-box CM makeshift DM is pretty laughable. We'll see what happens.

Any former Barça coach but Lucho would have had Samper on his team by now. Should've been promoted in 2015.

Samper a really poor performance against Real Madrid during 1st half today.

Hope if he can do better in 2nd half.

99% of his passing consist of passing the ball to the first guy next to him and when he tries to pass the ball in more complicated way it's basically always unsuccessful. He is often late on the ball and he adds nothing in defense and very little to none in attack. His positioning in defense is also very bad. He is so much trying to mimic Busquets but for now he is just pale copy of the original.

I know he was the biggest prospect of La Masia and destined to be next Busquets but his development is not going in the right direction at all. I would like to see more personality from his side. He has to develop his own style, when you are trying to mimic original so much it always ends in failure.

There is also one more thing, even Busquets had to change his style a bit. There is no more Xavi-Iniesta midfield where he could basically play pivot in the midfield all of the time. He now actually has to contribute much more in defense and pretty different in attack since we are unable to have so much control anymore. So trying to mimic the play of Busquets from Xavi-Iniesta time is just not going to work for Samper.

Everything you said is exactly what makes him special. His game is all about the quick connections, moving the ball around quickly. In fact, his tempo and drive on the ball is better than Busquets' (who uses feints in his advantage instead). What Samper is doing is exactly what Xavi got stick for doing too when he was younger. Something about being too boring.

He makes more vertical passes and passing between the lines than Gomes, who has played his best (low bar) games at DM, that's for sure, and he did do some nice ones vs Madrid for a pretty damn shit team with no, genuinely no, attacking movement from a heavy 9 like Kravets and no wingers. And because of that simple fact, that there are never any attacking options available, how can you expect him to go full Iniesta and constantly split opposition lines?

Also, I find it weird that you try to make it sound like a bad thing that he has learned things from the best DM in the game for the past 6-8 years and trying to replicate it :) I can't think of anything more normal to do from the legends of your position, ESPECIALLY when Busquets has all the things Samper is striving for, tackling, defensive positioning and physique.

But fair enough. I do agree that his development is not going the right way, which it hasn't been for the 2nd season in a row now. Hopefully a new coach will join whom Samper can gain benefit from, or Oscar Garcia joins a La Liga team, so we can send Samper to him with no worries.

To be honest I do not think another loan would benefit him. If we still think he has a true potential we must bring him back and try to play him as DM substitute for Busquets or he will never develop. But as I wrote before he has to develop his own style and get out from Busquets shadow. Also comparing him with Xavi is pointles, you really can't compare those two they are totally different.
