Have to disagree here. Let's pick justin bieber as a case study

While he's got millions of fans, he also has millions of critics, so where do the opinions start and facts end ?
The more you're successful, the more you obviously get some bad critics. But the amount of critics doesn't mean you're not successful.

In the case of bieber, he sells tons of products, his shows are full, and he has millions of fans, and he's not a fad given for how long he's now out there.

Whatever the amount of critics, he, as a singer/idol, is successful.

Implying that he could be a failure because he recieves "also" bad critics would be a fallacy of ignoring the evidences. And those evidences point towards him being a success.

But no one denied Ronaldo being a success (or did they ?)
The obvious fact is you can have very evident flaws and still be "a success"

If Ronaldo was socially a retard and not charming in some ways, he wouldn't have a big fanbase and millions of fans.

so this is what i disagree with

That's the same as what I said above.

You know some women find Brad Pitt unattractive. Most of them find him charming. Same case here.

It's not because here some people hate him with passion that on the grand scale it's the most shared opinions that he seems to be a cool guy, and that he is charming.

For example, in France, Ronaldo's fanbase is bigger than Messi (Survey from FranceFootball).

That makes me remember that french girl that ended up doing a commercial with him (she was acting as a maid in it. I think you can find it on youtube). She said he was very nice even if she was a newbie and a nobody. Actually, he was the one stressing over it and being overly timid.

But I'm not saying those qualities are objective and of course people have different opinions, which is also why you can't say "you think a, they think b, ronaldo has an enormous fanbase, thus b"

If we don't disagree on that than we don't disagree on anything.
About Messi's popularity in France, well his media portrayal is a complete disgrace, for years now people have found the dumbest reasons to criticize him, I bet if there was a poll asking whether or not messi took illegal drugs most would say yes.

There are more evidences that Ronaldo is positively popular than the opposite. Hence why you can't say "I think he's A, most evidences point to B, but I'm not ok with it, so A is the truth".

I visited lots of forums over the year from lots of clubs and I read mass of football papers from different countries and the hate Ronaldo gets here is not the reflect of most of the opinions you find elsewhere.

Add to that that Ronaldo is also popular outside of the football world. In the mode world and among the women that don't like/follow football for example.

I never pretended he's loved and is charming for 100% of the people. I disagree with, I think with enough reasons, with those that try to enforce he's dumb, socially bad, a jerk and not charming as if it was a fact among most people.

The example I gave above is like that. That girl expected a jerk because he's famous, rich, etc. and met a timid man that was looking at the ground all the time because he was timid. That doesn't match at all with the supposed jerk people think he is here.

I don't know I feel you're a bit mixing up "scientific" truth and the things people claim they know...
it goes without saying that none of us really know Ronaldo so yea in theory anyone could be wrong about him but by extension ( and yes its a stretch ) Blatter could be a very nice old man hellbent on fighting corruption etc.

So OK its not good to behave as if most people see Ronaldo in a negative light, but they may have a point, I certainly dislike Ronaldo for a number of reasons ( which have nothing to do with him being in Madrid ) and after all most users on here do dislike him

I dislike him too. Yet from the infos I gathered on his case over the years, we're the minority and I don't oppose it, I actually understand it, that's all I said.

In my case I can't really like a player that plays for a club I hate. Not that I "hate" Ronaldo, I just don't care about him when he does a supposed incredible thing, and whatever he does doesn't leave an impression on me.

Yet, I precisely know I am in the minority on the grand scale.

This may be the minority pov (does it matter though ?)
but sorry for using the term again, why couldn't CR7 be a social retard in the end ? People have become more famous/loved/etc with much greater handicaps.

Ronaldo is the main guy for Madrid, he was a superstar in Manchester, has an incredible physical condition and tremendous work ethics, is most likely completely single-minded, etc.

Honestly, it's not hard to understand why Ronaldo is so popular. First of all he has many female fans for obvious reasons, and a lot of guys really look up to a guy with that physique and with such a success story based on a lot of practise and hard work, and choose to take his arrogant and cocky antics as either cool or deserved. I have a couple of friends who are fans of Ronaldo and that's the exact reason. They think he's badass.

Personally I never got that. Not charming or in general someone who I could be a fan of. I aknowledge that he's a tremendous football player, but as Bertus says, none of his supposed incredible moments leave any real impression on me as someone like Messi, Iniesta, Ronaldinho or Neymar does.

I like that he's in RM though, the cool rivalry between him and Messi really fits the Barca and RM rivalry. And he's really entertaining, you have to give him that. Scoring a penalty after RM already has won the CL, and he runs to the sidelines and flexes like he scored the real winner.

My favorite thing is that whenever he scores he does that superman jump, where I feel he imagines lightningbolts shooting from his arms and eyes while explosions surround him. I always laugh as it feels like he imagines himself leveling up whenever he scores.

Popularity rise and fall with more bandwagoners jumping on and off the bandwagon. Media plays an important part on this. If the media start a plot against Ronaldo he will fall from the grace as well. However, I do not disagree with the factors you guys mentioned which help Ronaldo being more popular than Messi for the non-footballing communities.
