And what’s the breakdown by season since 2015/16? It could be that penalties awarded to us were so low in some seasons that it decreased the average so much that we fell out of top 5. 🤭
That's not the average though, but accumulated.

Correct. 👍🏻

Was a bit tired. Would have been once hell of a high average if RM scored so many penalty goals 🤣🤣
That's 9 seasons (plus one for this first game if it counts). So Real Madrid get nearly 10 penalties a season (on average as that is accumulated) across 38 games?

Obviously some will be lower and some even higher.

That seems a lot to me. I remember Man United got like 14 penalties one season and people were saying how astronomical that was.

Yeah! would be interesting to see a breakdown per season.

We could maybe identify patterns with breakdowns per season. Does anyone have the breakdown? It should be very easy to find over last 9 seasons.

Maybe some seasons they had players who were more likely to dive (like those first two seasons were Ronaldo's last two, did they get more in those?). Or maybe in other seasons they dived less or were more likely to shoot.

Much of it might be random, but we might be able to identify if there was perhaps a three our four year spell where they got disproportionately more than usual. Or was it generally evenly spaced out?

Ok, I have looked on TransferMarkt and found the breakdown for Real Madrid. Penalties received:

16/17: 8
17/18: 10
18/19: 10
19/20: 11
20/21: 3
21/22: 12
22/23: 12
23/24: 5
24/25: 14

That's the 85 stated in the tweet, if my calculations are correct.

A few things to identify. It seems fairly consistent - other than 20/21 and 23/24 being major outliers for fewer penalties awarded. Any thoughts on why or could it be random? No supporters in grounds in 20/21 were there? So less pressure on refs from fans in Bernabeu? It doesn't explain the other anomaly of 23/24, Interesting that Real won the league in one of those seasons despite only being awarded 5 pens.

Other than the outlier, the six seasons from 17/18 to 22/23 feature only a maximum difference of 2 penalties across the seasons.

Plus 24/25 they seemed to really ramp up the number of penalties awarded. The most over the period and 9 pen improvement from the previous season. Probably the signing of Mbappe, his cheating, and desperation for him to do well accounts for some of that.
