I would not blame him if he spent big on Diaz. Attacking players that play at a big level are very expensive. I will judge him on defensive signings personally. CB and fullback.

Not hesitating and moving for Garcia is a good sign.

Which, by all accounts was not Deco. Week before Joan signing he blabbed about Nico and said he doesn't really know the GK market as he leaves that to the scouts.
All signs point to our Joan orchestrating the move.

The positive now is that we have sorted what the board and Flick deemed the two priorities this Summer.

Now we have just over 5 weeks to potentially close some opportunity, potential or depth signings.

A left back would be great, but with Martin injured right now Jofre could get a big bite in pre season and close that door.

Regarding Deco. All week the rumors have been on Diaz. Yesterday morning it broke that we would offer big on Diaz. By the evening we had wrapped up Rashford. Seems he likes to throw the media off the scent while he works deals in silence. The Nico thing was an obviously from Nico side getting cold feet and a bait and switch.

I won't talk about the financial aspects, just him as a player.

Positives:

1) On form he can be a statistical monster, even if it is short bursts and purple patches. If he hits form he can really go through a scoring and assisting run;
2) His passing can be a bit better than people claim at times, he is capable of good long range ones and through balls, though he only showcases it rarely.
3) As people have said, playing with better players could get more out of him. Especially given Flick's system that is designed to maximise the output and abilities of forward players;
4) Could be a good use for FKs, as Barca don't really score them. Lamine wants to step up though too;
5) He seems to really want to be at Barcelona, which is a good sign. He does better when motivated and all the more so with it being a World Cup year;

Negatives (some of these will seem the mirror image to the pros):

1) While he can produce purple patches of form, he can also blow cold for long spells too, and is highly inconsistent. He's also the type who drifts through games not contributing much or at all in general play, even when he does score. Though I have some degree of Faith that Flick can make him a better all-round player, even temporarily;
2) despite some claims to the contrary, I don't feel he can play CF or RW. If he does play CF it would be more as a fluid front three, as he cannot hold the ball up like Prime Lewa could. He could do a job on the right when Lamine rests, but he's at his best cutting in and shooting or coming inside and dribbling, so it doesn't suit him as he is pretty one-footed in general;
3) While playing with better players can make one a better performer, it can also be that they do less well while not being one of the top men, as he was with fernandes at United in his best spell;
4) His attitude can be bad as everyone knows. If it turns sour he could well sulk at being Raphinha's backup in big CL games or Clasicos. This could destabilise the whole team. He's a huge focus of attention in the English media so any drama related to him will be huge news over here and in Spain, and exactly what Barca don't need in preparation for a big game, as it's already chaotic enough.

There's more, but just collating some of the things I have noted about him in the thread into one post.

This is the area I want us to scout some good players. Don't know from where, Europe, Belgium League, Ligue 1, South America. Land someone in defense who is great physically and has a very focused mentality.

I see some big talents at CB come from South America. Deco is supposed to know that market.

Gotta be honest I never quite understood the obsession with Perisic.

Especially when the type of left-winger we needed was quite specific. Decent dribbler + very quick.

Obviously if Perisic was like 6 years younger he would have been great.

Perisic is still twice the player Rashford is, even still in his old day. Was by far the best player in the Eredivisie this season and scored a couple of goals in UCL knock-out phase.

Rashford is a bum there are lots of wingers out there who are decent dribblers and very quick who wont cost you 14M gross.

Really, I have seen most matches by PSG in knockout phase in CL and the player that gave them the hardest time on the wings was Rashford on Villa Park.

Who would those guys be?

And Rashford did very well in the CL KOs for Aston Villa as well :lol:

Yes, and this time it would have been harder to make this deal. United still hope to cash in on him. They can't loan him until the end of the contract.

His wage at United is 19m as you said, and we pay 14m and some bonuses that we don't know how much and how hard it is for them to be triggered.

It is a good deal for us. Sure maybe we could have saved a bit more in wages, but nothing major. His wages would still have been pretty high since he comes for free with no loan cost.
'Hope' EXACTLY

UTD can hope whatever they want.
As we hoped to find buyers for Fati to cover his entire salary, or hoped the same for FDJ some time back,
or NOW hoping the same for Stegen.

We can only hope, as you say, but have no power or leverage in such situation.
Same goes for UTD regarding Rashford

It's a meh deal

Is it really 270 grand a week (as UK we think salary weekly, not yearly).

That's too much for him imo. Less than United were paying him but Barca really should only be paying about 100 grand a week given the baggage he comes with. But obviously that was pie in the sky.
