5 - Iñigo Martínez

I'm aware of all of those reasons. And one of those 6 was conceding 4 goals in that game, that cost us the CL.

Part of the drop in defensive level has to do with fatigue no doubt, and part IMO is to do with the likes of Inigo and Cubarsi being found out against more serious opposition in high leverage moments.

The mistakes they make are obvious to me and often independent of playing in a high line.
The return of the more defensive midfield profiles in Casado and Bernal will help. As good as Frenkie and Pedri are, they are not intense defenders.

Not concerned.
Both have been playing constantly the whole season.

Will comment next season, Flick has to rotate initially for this to happen next season.

Weird thing to say after such a season. They are more than good enough. If we don't apply pressure in the first third of the pitch, our defense is exposed. No one will look good under such conditions, not even prime Van Dijk

They aren't good enough tbh. They are both the same type of defenders who lack height, speed and physicality of elite CB.

You can have one of those if his talent is elite, you can't have both this way.

If anything, our system being hard makes it more essential to get elite CB.

It isn't going to happen though.

Essentially my point.

Non issue, he did his job this summerm

Next summer Christensen will likely take over.

If you think defendive personnel are the first problem, you are the problem.

They are like 2nd or 3rd in issues with our defending.

He was great in the league, absolute shit in champions unfortunately

It's because he is not a top player. He was a signing on a small budget, he has an injury record, and he's old. Played his entire career to date at 5-8th placed Spanish teams. Probably zero or near zero international experience for Spain. We are expecting too much out of him.

He was signed to be reliable in La Liga and he is. All of a sudden, Araujo played like a bum, Christensen out for the season, and he had to play CL later stages, and his lack of quality for this level showed.

In his defense everyone in defense and Tek were shiet in CL. And I would say everyone except Lamine was shiet against Inter.

At what point defensive struggles are not a players fault though?

Thats what the entire world is asking.

Why in order for us to score 4+ goals, we always have to give up 3?.

It's high risk football and that's the only way to do it?, we had to team just win the CL scoring 5 less goals than us, while conceding 9 fewer.

That with a CB partnership including one no one knew about before this season and the other was a common laughing stock at CB for years by most on here.

But a coach came in and developed a system that created multiple chances, while also conceding less.

We've seen about 5 teams out 3 past us in the 2nd half of the season.

We've seen two teams but 3+ past inter Milan without conceding a goal.

With CBs no better than ours, but we should replace out two starting CBs, instead of making simple tactical adjustments?.

Good post.

Inigo was signed as such but succeeded expectation for much of the season. And for much of the season performed at a world class level.

Dropped off at the end of the season but that's mostly due to the fatigue of the team going all in on three major competition and the relief, Araujo, failing to make an impact.

I'm not confident if he can repeat it next season. But if the team can be properly rotated and without major injuries, he is far from our major problem. The Barcelona team earlier in the season does not concede 7 against Inter.

Inigo didnt really start to struggle until Balde got injured.
