Sunning comments about Johan cruyf. The nerve of this guy

For clarification, that is his quote:

Ernesto Valverde: “Today if the Bar?a coach does what Cruyff was doing, they'll hang him for not being loyal to the style. When things were bad, Johan himself put Alexanko in front & asked us to cross to him! Now they exaggerate the style more than the owner of the same style!”

I see nothing wrong in it, it is not like he is talking about Johan, but his cult

He's right. Nothing wrong with hoofing it to the targetman in the dying moments. Crowding the box and crossing is probably the most effective way to get a goal in the last minutes of the game if you have at least 2-3 tall players.

This.

Now crossing being your main tactic while the rest of your overall play being useless like it is right now is definitely not something Cruyff would be proud of.

Key word is last minute. Pique was parading around in the box as a 9 early in the 2nd half in some games.

There are better ways to generate actions at Barcelona than to hope Pique will save you with his goalscoring abilities. When it's minute 85 and you don't have time for more elaborate options, sure, it can be an option to spam crosses in the direction of tall dudes, but for the more mediocre managers, it's not merely a last-term solution. It only shows how devoid of creativity they are.

This.

Basically this. It's fine to have that in your toolbox, wide men to place some good crosses and strong players to generate danger in aerial duels, but when you rely mostly on that and some tricks from Coutinho and Depay... boy oh boy...

All top coaches take the option of crossing the ball a lot if it is best way of breaking a team down.

Klopps Liverpool fire in the crosses, Pep will send KDB out to right to launch them in, Real won 4 CLs with crossing ball as huge weapon.

Some Barca fans are deluded and have think they have some pureist idea not based on reality of crossing ball a lot as some kind of weakness. In reality it is a key part of breaking teams down and having the threat of it also to stretch teams.

Despite LDJ being utter garbage today Barca were much better going forward when putting ball into box early and getting men in and around area in first half. It was more enjoyable to watch than that second half dirge when Depay, Coutinho and Ansu tried to pass ball and fucked up more often than not.

What were the reasons behind Rome and Anfield in your opinion?

Poor approach from Barca v Roma and players were shite and dropped their level.

Anfield nowhere near as bad an approach from EV but players made too many mistakes in what was much more even game based on balance of play than scoreline.

None of that is relevant to point about EV though and his options of how to coach the team.
