Yea, but with Griezmann, even since before he was brought, people knew he was neither a winger nor a no9. Which, when your system is 4-3-3 and you already have Messi and you don't have a world-class manager who maybe would fit him in, is a big issue.
The manager counts a lot. Would likes of Valverde manage to use Gundogan and Foden as False 9? Never in a million years. Would they manage to use Firmino as a 9 even though his scoring numbers are so low? No. The more basic a manager is, the more you need conservative, one-position players who are easy to integrate.
Only the greatest managers manage to transform players and tweak complex systems to fit in players who don't have a clear position on the field. For the more ordinary managers, signing a player who is neither a clear winger nor a clear "9" is a mistake. They won't know what to do with him.
