If he was a consistent goal scorer he wouldn't be getting played in midfield.
He has only once in his whole career scored more than 20 league goals in a season.
Not good enough for a supposedly world class player playing for the best team in the PL in that time period.

Not really a huge fan of Rooney but that statement couldn't be further from the truth.
He wasn't being played in midfield because he isn't a consistent goalscorer, but because United are lacking creativity in midfield and Fergie was experimenting with this option.
It is also not inaccurate to say his recent goal drought also had to do with the fact he was playing there.
Besides Rooney isn't really the type of striker that just scores a shitload of goals, he offers much more to his team's frontline...

Rooney doesn't have any quality midfielders anymore to supply him with passes. Carrick and Fletcher are inconsistent, nani doesn't pass, and young just crosses. We need players like Giggs and Scholes to truly let Rooney shine. Its like Messis and Xavi and Iniesta. Messis is extremely incosistent without them and can only rely on his brilliance to have a decent game.

you actually, either unknowingly or unwittingly, just explained why Leo is unable to shine for Argentina. Scholes and Giggs allow Rooney to be Wayne f**king Rooney, scourge of all things anti-United. Xavi and Iniesta allow Messi to be Messi. On Argentina, Leo must play as both Xaviesta and Messi, as Rooney must do without Scholes and Giggs. Hence why Leo's record with Argentina is not as shiny as it is with Barça (also, Pep > every manager Leo has had w/ Argentina).
