The signing of Alves is unmerited. He is probably gonna be the oldest fullback in LaLiga and didn't stand out even at Sao Paulo, what makes Xavi think he can contribute here? Because he's a club legend?

Excellent signing if true. Even at this stage in his career he is an upgrade over both RBs we have, most importantly he is an excellent professional who will bring a better work ethic to the squad - especially Dest who has to step it up

About his professionalism, read what he did in Sao Paulo. He doesn't care about football for a long time. He needs attention and hype. Well-known journalist Zhuka Kfuri: “This guy thinks that he is more important than the club, more important than S?o Paulo ... in my team they would treat him like a parasite.” Has he changed? No. But most importantly, he is old. Even Messi will not offer If a player at 38 is better than the main young players, then this characterizes the club, and if the coach hopes for him, then the coach.

What was the last time he played at the highest level to provide enough evidence he is any better than Dest at the moment?

But, even if we assume this is true (it isn't), I would like to know how him playing ahead of Dest would contribute in Dest's development?
This argument is mind-blowing!

He captained the team that won against pretty much Spain NT A in the olympics a few months ago.
Who cares about Dests development, he won't be the solution. Maybe Alves can help in Robertos development, and Roberto can be a good option until someone great arrives.

So, not even in a 1st tier NT competition, like Copa America or Euros or World Cup, (where Danilo !!! plays ahead of him) but in a 2nd tier NT competition, as the Olympics
And the last seasons he played football was for Flamengo, and even them did not try to renew him.
That's his level lately
And that's anywhere close to the highest level, which even NT competitions cannot meet?
Whereas Dest plays already in La Liga and CL?

Mind-blowing how can people be so delusional

PS:
We are past the stage where Roberto was 'in development'
also past the stage where Roberto was 'an option until someone great arrives'
You have missed the last 4 seasons of Barca, it seems
