Martin Braithwaite

Guys, relax. This signing is not to be compared to usual summer or even january transfers - it is in its utmost literal sense a 'last resort' buy.

Compare the transfer to the conditions under which it belongs. The player we can get has to be from either La Liga or the Segunda. He can only play in the remaining 14 league games (this season) and is bought as a temporary 'quickfix' for a sinking ship; when at sea, you cannot repair a carsized hole by welding and fortifying, you need a quick solution that might or might not work, but you have to compare the outcome of this transfer based on its extremely limited conditions.

Braithwaite scored against both Barca and Real Madrid in the same week for relegation-battling Leganes. That's pretty decent. He works a lot defensively, has pace and can bag a goal or two if we are lucky; that's it! That's our best case scenario. 2 goals from maybe 4-7 games from him.

Even Prince, who was shite, was a winter transfer/loan. Huge difference.

And yes, Abidal is hugely incompetent and the fact that Dortmund got Haaland for 20 mil. euros is laughably infuriating, but that does not dilute the fact that Braithwaite is brought in as a quick-fix for a sinking ship. His market value is realistically around 10-13 mil euros, so we have in a sense spent 5-8 mil euros for his services throughout the season. That's peanuts compared to the ultimate pair of sandals that is Coutinho and Dembélé (flip-flops).

Quick fix? He doesn't even have the qualities to fix anything. Not to mention we are spending 20 plus millions on him (including his salary), how is this quick fix? Just because 20m+ is peanuts compared to the money we spent on Coutinho and Dembele it doesn't make it right. Idiotic transfer through and through. I wonder why we were hell bent on getting this guy, did Setien really request him?

Angel Rodriguez would have been a quick fix.

2023

What a pointless signing. Might get a few minutes this season in less meaningful matches, after which the bloke will have his arse stapled to the bench for the next three years while happily collecting his wages.

Seriously what is the point in having an academy or a B team if you don't even trust them to fill in for all of the 150 minutes in the league they might play during a season.

It's the end of February now, over half the fixtures played, copa is over and champions league is in the knockout stages.

Eibar's, Leganes etc at home is the only time Braithwate would be trusted anyway, just use a fucking b team player. Save the money to waste it on someone else in the summer. This club is finished.

If Messi can't click with Coutinho, Ibra, Griez, Dembele, Dybala, Aguero and countless other top attacking players then what chance has this journeyman got?

I like it - will give him the extra motivation to give it his all. He can only surpise because most people expect Boateng v. 2
