Quique Setien

Quique had a tough hand dealt to him BUT he didn't make it easy on himself with the horrendous tactics he employed v Bayern.

All time worst tactics, just in that game. You can't blame the "amigos" solely for that one.

Hard to even get to tactics subject if you are not even sure the players listened to him at that point. It's all speculation basically, since he seemed out of it already at the time.

He should have passed on the job imo, but easier said than done.

By the time the Bayern game come he was hardly even managing the side- going through the motions if you will.

He was a bit naive too though, or rather idealistic in what he thought he could implement and ended losing the amigos who initially seemed to be supportive of him (Busquets for example).

Some of his selections were straight out of cosplaying Cryuff and something you do in pre-season and not when coming in half way through the season. Going to Valencia in his 3rd game with a 352 and a back three of Umtiti-Pique-Roberto and Ansu on the right. Just wtf.

So certainly didn't help himself aswell.

Post Anfield, Busquets Alba Pique Rakitic should have been axed.

Suarez as a sub, or he goes too.

Instead we bought Griezmann and persisted with Rakitic Busquets Vidal in midfield v Bayern

Why am I not intellectually honest Bobo?

You called people here clowns, but you were very negative towards Setien IIRC.

Yeah I cannot disregard Quiques man management and status, they are part of the deal, but it would surely help if the board had given him complete trust, instead of wanting to replace him immediately (and god knows what shady things they did in the dark to lower his status)
Quique was not in charge of the team in his last games, he had surrendered already. He was decent while he was still in charge.

He was idealistic and not pragmatic from the start. I like that and I think that is what Barcelona needed and needs. Valverde was very pragmatic and he got to stay for a few years and stalled a team with the GOAT that the club will never see again in maybe his best years. It was OK, but not the best for Barcelona.

Setien needed time and trust. Instead we have Xavi now who has gotten those things, but who has shown no sign of idealism, creativity or progress so far.

Setiens reign ended before it started. Sure he was idealistic, stupid and weak, but I believe it would have been good for Barcelona if he had gotten appropriate, complete trust (first from the board, and then from the players)

"Setien was bad in fact he was very bad"
Bartomeu

Don't be fooled by this result, he beat barca and madrid in his betis season and was still sacked

A good result vs Madrid means jack shit for the master tactician, 4d chess playing shepard.
He made terrible calls while he was with us and the team regressed badly.
Also delivered us the worst defeat in our CL history while having players that were still pretty good, probably better than today's squad, if used correctly.

So, let's not get carried away like something changed. He can play good football with low tier squads but will never be able to handle top players with his persona. Making the players dislike you is not something you want as a manager.

Out of touch and reality again

As people above said, he was good when he was himself and doing his job, that is in the first 2 months before pandemic
By the time of the 2-8 debacle, Amigos had assumed full control of everything, even the tactics.

"while having players that were still good" yeah as good as the 2-8 shows against top players coached by top coach

Amigos didn't make him play 442 with Vidal and Roberto as the wide mids (lol)

2-8 happened because of the pandemic and the infamous lack of any physical preparation at Barca for years. Bayern had 10 times the lungs of Barca players that match.

Setien happened to be the guy in the worst moment. If EV was in charge we would have still lost, but something in the range of 1-4 or 1-5. Players believed in Valverde, while Setien was nobody appointed for... impressing part of the amigos after that 4-3 Betis win at Camp Nou.

His subs in that game was just awful and showed delusion.

Entire approach was hilarious man.

Yes, the players we had were significantly better than what we currently have. That is obvious since they didn't drop to EL for two consecutive years but were on the verge of a cl win if not for one if the worst misses in football history by Dembele and a meltdown in anfield. Our current squad can't get a sniff of semi finals.

That Valencia game was the moment I knew this guy is a fraud. We were playing aimlessly with him well before the 8-2.
