No surprises, the footballing public hate Barcelona. If Ronaldo had the season messi had, he’d have won the award.

I don't like the guy but hearing Leo and CR7 talk about their rivalry was cool, they obviously have a lot of respect for eachother, really wonder what they talk about.

if Messi had the season Ronaldo had he wouldn't have made the top 3, heck last season Messi had the most goals in Europe with 45, won the European Golden shoe and the domestic double and yet finished 5e.

The reality is that these awards look more at the CL than anything else. CL is the competition with the biggest teams in it and the only place where these top players can compete with each other.

Sadly, us with Messi in our team are embarassments in CL for 2 years running. Liverpool are not. They are last year's finalists and this year's winners. By performing like that their best players will get their turn at picking up the individual titles. It seems Van Dijk is that player, not Salah.

It's just how it is with awards. Best player in the best team in Europe wins these titles more often that not. That best team is currently Liverpool. Could have been us but we dropped the ball.

Then they should change the award to best player of the CL winner or the player deemed most deserving by the press. Because thats basically what these awards have become and don't forget that some votes are basically bought because of journalist connections to teams and especially to player agents.

Press will side with the winners as well.

Thing is people got tired of Messi and Ronaldo winning everything. The only way they win another Ballon d'Or in the future again is if they win the Champions League.

Funny thing, remember you all how Messi was winning every freaking "player of the week" last UCL?

GOAT season ruined for 1/60 matches because of some retards in our team.

Individual titles just don't exist anymore. They had to make it team success first otherwise Messi would pick it up every year and people would lose interest in football, meaning less money.

He also looked incredibly awkward in that interview with CR7. It's must be true what they say - he is painfully shy. Went beetroot red.

Even that shouldn't have changed him winning the player of the year award.

The fact that the best player by far doesn't win it means the award is nothing more then the prize for the player with the best narrative or deemed most deserving by the press.

What relevance does it have, almost none.

This is basically the same what happened to Jordan who 'only' won 5 MVP's while he probably should have won 7,8 or 9

I believe that if the team lost in a more acceptable way (ex. 1st leg win 2-1 at home, lose 0-1 away) and not a remontada, then I think Messi could have won the award.

The effects of losing with a big advantage took a huge dent to how people saw Messi's season.

What you talking about, Van Dijk played both finals

Chill out, forgot he arrived in the jan transfer window. Still though wasn’t any talk of him getting the award last year after reaching the final but he goes one better and is now the best player in the world.

I just checked the 2013 Uefa POTY voting to see what the points margin was like since Ribery then lost the Ballon d'Or

Riber had 36 points
Messi had 13 points
Ronaldo had 3 points

If Ribery lost it from that lead, Messi can still definitely win The Best and Ballon d'Or

The Best has already been voted for but its voted for also by players and fans.
